Yes, just 1 leather side rein, on the inside only.
I asked, and iirc the reasoning was (and this is incomplete obv, i'll get more details next time I speak to him):
to show the horse that it can bend to the inside and learn to balance itself that way (without restriction).
to start teaching the horse to look for the inside rein contact.

I think he sticks to using just 1 side rein until these things are accomplished, and then the outside one is put on. He uses them loosely, never tight.

That's interesting. On my side-reins thread, some people have posted that the outside side-rein should be the shorter of the two (I have always had the inside one shorter). Surely only one rein on the inside is effectively the same difference, to an extent, I realise having an outside rein will stop some of the flexion to the inside.

Oh dear.... I was told to use them as part of Rocky's rehab after his bout of lameness to help build his muscle up in the correct way. I am not a lazy rider at all - I put a lot of effort into my riding etc but I did use them :/

Wouldn't having one side rein on the inside simply encourage the horse to push its weight through the outside shoulder, hollow to the inside and go crooked? Genuine question! Also, I'd worry about asking a young horse to canter on the lunge with an enforced inside bend (rather than for example side reins set up to encourage straightness) as most young horses need a slight outside flexion to learn to balance a canter correctly. That would be my initial reaction anyway.
