So , I hesitated to post this as feel a bit of an idiot for making a mess of our test yesterday, but here goes, CC more than welcome!!

We went to a local venue yesterday to do our first Novice Test ( 27)

We have been practicing really hard at home and are both more than capable of all the movements, but he and I seem to go a bit backwards when get in the ring.

Am starting to realise he is far more sensitive than I think and often I just try and DO to much, resulting in awful wiggly hands and kicking legs, when most of the time less is more ( but I am trying very hard to break all my bad habits !)

Anyhow, we got there early, warmed up quite well, used the routine my event trainer friend has been helping us with to get him stretching over his back and more supple, in fact it was the best warm up at an event we have done and he was really listening to me.

off to do test and I tried really hard not to rush him as have tendancy to panic and dash through it all, it wasnt going to badly in first half of the test, although I can see he should be rounder, needs more impulsion and to be more through!
Then at second canter, I just got the wrong lead and didn't correct, no idea what I was thinking ( feel a right idiot !) why did I not correct it, can see from video why we got it wrong and am kicking myself now.
for anyone who managed to read this far without falling about laughing, link to video is below

I am putting it all down to experience and think just need to get out and ride some more tests so it becomes not a big deal.

chocolate biscuits on offer for anyone who got this far :-)
on a the plus side horse was a good boy all day at the venue, which makes competing alone so much easier!

You sound just like me! Defo take the positives from the day and think onwards and upwards :) At least you didn't get a buck in your canter and a 4 like me!

So like me! I suspect your brain was full with so many other things that rather right canter lead was just too much to think about! I'm venturing out again shortly, lord help us haha.

good luck Bernster, sure you will do just fine!

you won't ever do it again though :) don't worry about it now, the judge will have seen it all before so chalk it up to experience. I find it helps to start planning the next one, when I'm in the dumps about our last outing. The more you do, the easier it gets.

Many years ago I rode what felt like a decent Novice test and came out of the arena (it was so long ago that everything was ridden on grass) only for my YO to mention that I had ridden ALL the canter work on the wrong lead and I hadn't noticed ....

I struggle getting right rein canter sometimes on my boy, but he's so balanced and has quite narrow shoulder movement, so I quite often don't notice when he's on the wrong lead. We've all been there, so no one will be laughing at you :)
