Where can i find one? Ive had no success Googling.
Need a large, dressage half pad with shims for my ever changing native.
Need good quality sheepskin like the Mattes platinum (I.e not just wool woven into a backing material, made to look like sheepskin). It seems they don't exist anywhere ??

Thanks for the link. I've tried one of these but as it just comes in one standard style (rather than dressage/GP etc) the front pokes out in front of the saddle. This one is more suited to GP and jumping saddles. Need a dressage one, but just can't find a dressage one with shims :-(

You can order direct from mattes via www.numnah.com

It takes a few weeks as they are made to order but top quality kit ;) I've had one with the 4 pockets and a pad with 2 pockets for a bridging saddle.

^^^^ Mattes are the real deal, well worth the wait. I've got the 4 pocket correction numnah for my wonky Tammy. They come with a good selection of thin shims which you can build up as necessary in each pocket to refine the fit, in T's case to stop her saddle slipping to the right.

I've looked on the Mattes website and couldn't find a dressage one. However I will try again. I had a platinum half pad a few years ago and loved it - need the same now but with shims. Cheers everyone (off to sell a kidney or 3)

when you log in to the website and click 'more details' then it gives the option of dressage, GP and jumping, as well as being able to choose size, how many correction pockets, colour of the quilt etc.

Mattes make all shapes and sizes, half pads, half lined numnahs and square pads, all in DR, GP(VS) and jump, wonderful pads and very adjustable with trimmable shims, so many leave a big ole ridge in the middle of the saddle if shimming front or back.

I've got a KM Elite one from their Distinction range (100% Merino lambswool) with multiple shims that fitted my 18" dressage. It's up for auction on ebay - it's lovely but don't need it anymore. Think it's just personal preference as to brand. Haven't included a link so hopefully this won't get pulled!

I've just Googled these. As they don't come in dressage/GP etc style, didn't you find it was too forward cut for the straight dressage saddle flaps ?

Not from memory - I'll take it up the yard tomorrow and try it under my new dressage saddle and take a pic for you. Certainly some of the less expensive brands don't fit well at the back of the saddle (they tend to be more square shaped when clearly the panels are more rounded).

As an aside, for other people not you, I prefer wool woven into backing. You can guarantee that it has no seams, I find it much easier to wash and dry, alters the saddle fit much less, and easier to comb out the loose hair. And cheaper of course.

I would also always go for a korrector pad, not shims. If you have shims, what happens where the shim ends?

My experience of wool woven onto backing is that they need to be treated as consumables... all the ones I've had have ended up with mats of hair between the woven wool and the quilt, despite meticulous care, washing and brushing out :wink3: only accessible when you take them apart and often difficult to feel if the quilt is quite thick (though I bet the horse can feel it when you are sat on :eek3: ) I haven't ever found a similar problem with skin-on items as the horse's loose hair can't penetrate the skin. May not be an issue if used between saddle and saddle cloth rather than direct onto the horse, of course :)

Mattes are never made with seams, buy cheap and you'll run into problems, even the well known Merino pads often end up with the fleece falling out. They need washing with care, but the right leather wash like Mattes melp, and a cold wash, and they're fine, they are slow to dry. They do last longer than most wool (shorn) pads.

Shims - the Mattes shims are thin, 5mm felt, and if you only ever have one edge against the horse, then it's no problem, I rehab many horses under this system. I am less of a fan, as I said, of some of the foams as shims as they're either so thin or squishy they do nothing, or they're so thick or firm that they leave a big ledge under the saddle.

Any thick pad means the saddle must be fitted to accommodate it, but thicker pads tend to offer the most benefit, you pays your money, you takes your choice.
