Dressage trainers in or near the north west?

Stephen Clarke is the most lovely man and not in the least frightening!

If you have a chance to train with him, I'd say go for it!

Don't know what her training is like but is Angela Crane near you? She's at Holden Fold Dressage, Tockholes, Darwen.

I know someone who trains regularly with Stephen Clarke and they say he is a legend, and a quiet man, not frightening!

Also highly recommend Sue Stewart, she is brilliant but says what she thinks!

Stephen is just lovely, always wanted a lesson with him!!

Sue Stewart is an FEI judge, shes based nr Garstang (we stay with her on the way up to Scotland) and shes lovely! I think shes now doing FEI ground jury etc at 3* events.

Stephen is lovely!!! He is very fair and down to earth no matter what quality/ standard of horse/rider he gives his all. There really is no need to be nervous. Remember not only would you gain experience of his training methods but also the views of one of the most sought after judges in the world!!

Ohh, I had lessons with Mrs Johnson for 6 months last year! I used to get off very red in the face and with breathing difficulties, lol!! She is tough, but amazing!

ETS: she loves to tell me the story of when Stephen Clarke went to Germany, and they told him he had fingers like english sausages!!

Yes I get that too!!!

I swear she is worth her weight in gold, I think she has done as much for our jumping confidence as she has for the dressage.

And can you imagine any other dressage trainer being thrilled by their pupil wanting to P2P the horse they've been working on for 12 months!!!

I've had a couple of lessons with stephen Clarke and he is great but he is not easy to get regular sessions with due to his judging commitments.

Clive used to do some clinics near me and he is def value for money and you would be able to have more regular sessions.

There is also Lisa Marriott (Southport way) who is currently training herself in Holland with Imke Schellekens Bartels. She is back in Feb. PM me if you want contact details

The Moody's are just outside Sheffield as someone else mentioned.
Hannah esberger is also not far from that area.

Sonia Webster is then in Derbyshire (shes the young lady who trained Samantha Harrison prior to her relocation last year).

They all work together quite a lot on clinics in the area and are heavily involved in the BYRDs regional training too

Theres then Richard Davison more into Staffordshire and hes lovely (although someone on here mentioned hes picky about who he takes but i never found that at all)

Erm, not really sure that those areas will help you but it was my area so its the best of my knowledge for that really

I don't know how far you are willing to travel but I find Debbie Jones very helpful and the few times I've had training with her I've learnt loads and my horse has gone so much better. I think she's based near Northwich. I've also heard great reports of Dianne Breeze but she's a bit further from you at Market Drayton, Shropshire.

Theres non near me either - its a day long trip for me to get to my lessons. I get up at 6am on saturday/sunday morning, we leave the yard at 8am, get to Andrew's for 11pm, then get back to the yard by 3/4pm. Then actually home by 5pm.

Thanks to everyone... I hate change, it upsets me!

And I get so nervous about finding a new trainer to go alongside Spencer's teaching rather than be completely different. I know you don't want them to be exactly the same, but if they are too different I just find myself getting confused

Have you asked your regular trainer? I find quite often people who are not that available know of people who teach/think similarly to "fill in", as it were. At least he may be able to tell you if anyone else he teaches also uses someone else in your area.

I think it's just courtesy anyway, if you ride with someone regularly, to ask their opinion of the options. It's not even to get a "pro or con", it's more just to make sure you are getting someone on the same track so as not to get too confused.

I can't comment on most trainers here, obviously, but Stephen Clarke has done clinics and judging in Canada and is certainly far from scary! He seems a very nice, obviously knowledgable man and eager to help anyone keen to learn. I can see he would be difficult to get, though, as he judges a lot. Again, perhaps if he can't help you he can recommend someone who can. Never hurts to ask.
