I will be venturing into BD tests soon after general competing and doing unaffiliated for years. Most people seem to wear black jackets these days, can I use my plain showing navy one or should I get a black one? I know BD rules say either, but what is in vogue just now?
Also, is white gloves best kept for the higher levels, should I wear black? I am more used to the showring where you never wear black gloves, always brown.
Also, there is always ribbing about dressage riders and bling but looking at the photos in H&H etc. no-one seems to have any other than the odd browband. I quite fancy a nice stock pin but that would be the extent of it. Who uses these sparkly diamonte stirrups, and the gloves etc??

You can wear your navy jacket, I prefer navy to black anyway. I wear black gloves but my friend wears white; (Novice/Elem) I think it was just driven into me at Pony Club that white gloves accentuate any movements that your hands make. I'm told I have good hands but just can't bring myself to wear white gloves.

Bling - actually I think the rules suggest you should be quite conservative. I sometimes have a bling browband but everything else is really plain. You'll be fine with a nice stockpin. Never understood the blingy stirrups myself, either!

Wear what you want!! don't be a sheep!

I haven't competed for 2 years due to an accident

but prior to that I wore my blue hacking jacket or navy show jacket with white or cream gloves.

Bling, not as such, but Ralph has a nice Stuben bridle with a brow band that has holes cut into it and silver underneath which looks quite nice.

This is what we intend to wear this year when we venture out agian, cant wait

Ideally, your horse and his movements should be so breathtakingly beautiful that no-one even notices you or his tack! In pursuit of that goal, you and the tack should be understated and elegant. If you must have bling, don't let it be noticeable at a distance!

I wear a navy jacket as (like you I think) I have a nice showing jacket and cannot justify spending money on a black one when blue is allowed. I wear very cheap blue cotton gloves usually but last time out I picked up my nice dark brown leather showing ones and no one commented on it.

bling wise I wear a gold stock pin with a little pearl/diamonte thing in the middle. This pin actually belonged to my grandmother and I've worn it at every show for about two years now as a lucky charm. It doesn't make me win or anything, but since I started wearing it I've yet to fall off at a show! *touches wood*

One day I do want to get a nice browband I saw which had pearls/diamontes set in it and as my horse has no white on her head I think it would suit her. Can't afford it yet though!

I wear a navy jacket and have never felt like I'm wearing the wrong thing. I wear white gloves, habit rather than anything else. I have noticed when writing for dressage judges that bling is frowned upon where it gets to flashy. Tie pins, browbands are okay. I personally don't wear it, but I think if its subtle its ok. I know glitter is completely forbidden and have seen someone eliminated for it.

I wear navy jacket and hat, white gloves and I have a bling tie pin. Nothing wrong with a bit of bling! God you should see what Carl Hester's horses wear LOL! Patent nosebands, bling browbands, fancy quartermarks, patent boots on the riders, the lot.

navy or black for me depends on the colour of your horse, i-m anti black personally unless on a bay or black then it looks good.
i much prefer navy, only white/cream gloves if your hands are very steady or it will highlight it.
i wear all navy, white breeches and pony has a bling browband, oh and i did have a tiny bling stone on my stock pin til i lost the thing - we look pretty smart i think, just need to get a performance to match would be nice!
