Driving a 3.5ton box

My transport for a clinic on saturday has just fallen through but the local hire company has a 3.5ton box available to hire.
I'd need my Dad to drive but he's never driven a horse box before and when I suggested it weeks ago he was apprehensive.
So, how difficult is it to drive first time? Will he be able to just jump in and go or am I not being realistic?
 
Modern vans are like driving a larger car. If he can change cars with no hassle then there shouldn't be a problem. If he finds swapping from one car to another tricky then he will take a while to get used to it.
 
It's easy - I'd never driven one before I bought mine and had to drive it 150 miles home. Just remember that it's wider than a car so you need to try not to kerb it (yes I've done that!), or take cyclists out, and because of the extra weight you need to be more aware of stopping distances and giving yourself extra braking time and space.
 
He should be fine. (tell him to 'man up' :D )

Just tell him to imagine an egg in a shallow dish on the centre of the dashboard - and not to let the egg move out of the dish whilst driving ;)

He'll get practice on feeling the brakes & clutch when you pick it up - hope you have a great time :)
 
He should be fine. Mine drives like a large car and I find it very easy, and am the first to admit I am not the most confident of drivers!
 
^^What they all said :D I'm terrified of driving anything except my own car :o and even I managed to drive a 3.5T with my precious horse on ;)
