Yup, that is a problem- would proberbly want to turn him away for 6 months if I bought him (unless he had already been broken and then turned away).
*You Must NOT buy another grey!*

Very nice horse.

People will prob shoot me down now as its common practice in a dressage yard etc but its only rising 4 and it has spurs and a whip being used on it - is it that lazy already
confused.gif
and it has no boots on arrrggghh!

My old horsie had a huge problem with boots - if you put them on he spent the whole time focusing on how to get them off and it ended up being dangerous - I had him for 8years, he competed JRN and Intermediate, including international events - all without anything on his legs. In the whole time we had him he never had any problems with his legs - he learnt to be careful!

I work at a yard full of 4yo competition horses. Nearly all are ridden in spurs but the riders are international riders so no harm done imo.

I dont see the problem with no boots, I hardly ever put boots on my horse. Only boot him for hacking and XC jumps.

Lovely horse btw

have to say, my first thought was, goodness its not wearing boots
i would never jump my 5yo without boots, but I can understand that others dont

*whispers* he may not be wearing boots, but that doesn't shy away from the fact that he is scrummy
smile.gif
Not his fault they didn't put boots on him
tongue.gif

Giggles, I didnt use them unless required (ie when he was being a toad)

I took them off whilst doing dressage eventing but wore them for the jumping phases.
Ive just started riding him in them again to help with more lateral movements... he now finds the aids to flying changes far easier
smirk.gif
and offers a change whether youre ready or not lol

Hes a sensitive soul, halfstep rode him yesterday and just touched him with a spur in the medium trot and ended up with canter, you have to ride him off your calf for that movement.

I dont see a problem with wearing spurs at a young age, they are there if you need them.
Easier than taking a hand off the rein and apply a slap.

Surely its not about the horse being lazy but that they are being used to make the aids more precise? I don't know really, just another take on it?

So sometimes puts me off when I see ads with ppl in spurs especially if the rider looks to have a poor position in the ad, not that this girl does, far from it actually

You can always wear spurs and not use them.
smile.gif

I always carry a stick with young horses and wear spurs after the horse is comfortable in the basic stages not because the horse is "lazy" but because it's part of the horse's education both to accept the artificial aids and to react appropriately to them.

As to boots, it really is personal preference. I've worked with many professional horsemen who believe horses should NOT be booted in their early education because they need to get their own legs out of the way. I have so say I haven't noticed their horses are any less sound than anyone else's. I always put boots on horses with shoes but I will confess I don't always put them on barefoot young horses - so long as they have good conformation - because sometimes they cause more problems than they might prevent.

Besides, as said, if you put them on for ads them people say, "I wonder if there's something wrong with its legs/movement that it needs boots?" You can't win.

I don't think you can automatically make an association between a naked legged horse and bad horsemanship or uncaring management!

I use spurs and carry a schooling whip on the 4 year old I ride. He isn't lazy, it just refines the aids, I carry the whip for when he is learning BASIC lateral movements in case I have to back up the leg.
This is him:

I totally understand you dont need spurs just because horses are lazy
smirk.gif
am just saying sometimes people can make horses dead to the leg if they dont use them correctly, especially in early stages of the training.

Tis a lovely horse though and I dont disagree withany one using spurs on horses, young or old if they are used correctly!
grin.gif
The boots thing bothered me more I have a bit of OCD about it I think!

I rang that yard when I was looking for a horse, asking if they had anything for £7k or under and they told me they never have horse worth that kind of money in, their horses are all of very high quality.... well that's a lie as that 4 yr old is under 6k! Strange behaviour to actually send someone away who has the reddies! I wouldnt have wanted such a young horse anyway but still....
They are SO near to my house I thought I would ring them. Have always thought of them as a bit snobby since.
