Due Dates

Just wondering if a mare (ie my mare) had ovulated on the 25/06/08 when would you guestimate her due date to be she's scanned in foal and the stud have said 29/05/09approx (long way off

) does that sound about right

I know it isn't a exact science and foalie will arrive in its own time but just wondering what stud yards (breeders) go off when telling potential mummys arrival dates!!!!

Mine ovulated then was served 2.06.07, she was given a due date of 2.05.08-09.05.08.......................... she foaled on the 9th May this year, so I think the dates you have been given are correct.

the table you replied with do you go from the last covering or the day of ovulation

Ovulation, but if you don't know it then last cover date will do. The birth is actually fairly unlikely to occur on day 340, so a few days inaccuracy don't matter too much!

I put mine on foal watch (stabled at night with foaling alarms on) at 321 days after last covering. Only one caught me out by foaling at 319 days in the field! I work on a 'due date' of 343 days - and 5 out of 17 foaled within 3 days either side of that date - with 2 being exactly on time. One went 9 days over and the rest were 5 to 14 days 'early'.

But have to agree with Janet, and her foal watch plan, mares can be sneaky !!
