im just about to start a claim with the above, has anybody EVER had a pay out from them??

befor eanybody shoots me i didnt insure the horse with them... (long story)

Those letter and payouts don't generally go together!

Keep copies/records of everything you send them/whenever you speak to them, who you speak to etc. If you have a straight forward claim then there should not be a problem. They have to comply with FSA regulations BUT they will generally automatically in the first instance tell you you cannot claim for one reason or another. They'll find something in their small print.

Still as i say they have to comply with FSA and "treating customers fairly" so just keep at them. just be prepared for it to take a while!

If it's a vets bill claim be ready to have to pay the vet first as often they are not prepared to wait for E&L to settle bills.

yes i was wondering this.... hence the question,. i have a feeling it may not happen, but we shall see, somebidy must have experiance of a claim through them.

as i said i didnt insure her, it was done through the previous loaners, but due to coming back broken, the insurance has been kept going.

They have paid out for me on 2 seperate occassions. But were very very very slow and I had to chase them the whole time, so it was a bit of a nightmare! they also did try not to pay out on one of them, but they changed their minds in the end!

A good friend of mine is about 3 or 4 months into a claim....she notified them as soon as she had the vet out to her horse (breathing probs) and they still "haven't made their minds up" about it. She has spent 3K already, and horse went to Liverpool today for more tests.... The horse didn't have anythinh excluded so no reason for them to even try to get out of it.

Ditto to the above with me - do think that a 'Watchdog' threat that was thrown in by my mother also aided in the eventual payout.

Just keep fighting. We have people working for us now who used to work for them and they employ a sort of 'buffer team' to just turn down claims! Also they are employing people who know nothing about horses at all which doesn't help. Their staff turnover is v high!

You will get a pay out providing your claim is legit and you do it by the book as it were.

Good luck with it, let us know how you get on!

I have had in the region of £7000 probably £5000 of which they have paid.Make sure you keep details of who you speak to the date and time copy every letter and you shouldnt have a problem .Looks like they are going to get another bill for lou if things dont work out .Feel free to pm if you need any help I have made a appeal with them successfully in the past for my boys ligament and spavin operation.

I have had over 2k paid witin 6 weeks for tendon injury....no issues, no quibbles a pleasant experience!

ETA this was in july so very recent too.

Yes, my OH did get quite a lot of the costs she spent on her Newfie back, but it took a long time and a lot of correspondence.

Confirm EVERYTHING in writing, by fax, have all the bills to hand, again they will want to see them, and use tough negotiation techniques.

A snotty letter to the MD doesn't do any harm either. At least it worked for us.

E&L are cheap for a reason!

I DID get a full payout from them for vets bills and the death of my horse. It took a little over 6 months to settle the claim and A LOT of chasing with letters and phone calls. Fllowed by lots of delaying tactics by E & L and 'losing' faxes etc.
Keep on at them at all costs - they will pay out if you keep at them.
Good luck - and remember to keep all copies of letters, phone calls etc.

fantstic thanks guys, will start keeping a diary of calls etc,

has any of you claimes been over a long period time?? ie my mares due for a second scan next week (tendon) then will be turned away for 3 months, then re scanned..

i had two pay outs when my pony's where pts had to keep calling them and they tried every reason not to pay as the pony's where both under 4 but got there in the end and they covered both bills

yes spavin op in jan and splints from march these are still ongoing .
Last year we had tendon injury and like you box rest and re scanning took place over several months we had similiar the year before with ligament if nothing else I am good with paper work even if my riding skills have fallen to the wayside lol
should add that my new horse is with different insurance co you live and learn

Keep pushing them, and don't expect to see anything for about a year (or more), that's how long it took them to cough up to my friend (I had warned her, but she had been with them for years and had previous claims paid quite quickly (in her word), which equated to about 6 months)!!!! Good luck.

I'm sure they string it out, so you either give up, or they get at least another years premium from you (cos lets face it everyone goes elsewhere once they finally get their pay out).

Several vets in our area consider you to be uninsured if you are covered by E&L. They want to be paid by the owner & then any subsequent payout you may or may not receive from E&L you can keep. They have had too many bad experiences of either not being paid or being paid months late.

You need to ring them at least weekly!!!

None of the vets round us will wait for payment from E&L, owners have to pay up front and claim back from insurance company. They will however deal with nearly ever other insurance company direct!!!

i dont mind payin gthe vets first, and so far *fingers crossed big time* the bill isnt to bad, if it mounts up will take the direct route, give them one chance then go the legal route, if it stays at a small amount, and the mare can returned to normal work/jumping then i may save myself the grief and drop the claim.. this thread was deffinatley worth it, lesson learnt...dont faff around with them go in for the kill straight away! ..

I got a payout of around £5k but I had to chase them for it as they DID try to wriggle out of it. My vet also sent some sharply worded letters as they alleged she'd told them my horse had stable vices and behavioural issues which somehow invalidated my claim. Keep copies of everything and hassle, hassle, hassle!

Yes I did....I gather this is no mean feat, but I do write a rather nifty letter with long words and everything...

.... it tooks months though, and several letters/phone calls....needless to say on the same day I cashed my cheque, I also cancelled my policy.....

I'm wondering why anyone still uses this company!?!
You shouldn't have to be chasing for payments at all! There are a lot of good insurance companies out there who will make sure your horse recieves the very best vet care available when you need it the most and pay the bills (after excess of course). In the worst case scenario and your horse has to be put down, the claims handlers should deal with this in a timely fashion of a few weeks, paying out the sum insured. This company just gives the rest of the insurance industry a bad name.
It's awful when you have to call the vet, surely this is an added pressure most people just don't need!

My vets require the owner to pay upfront and then reclaim from E&L, any other insurance company they will happily accept claims directly to. I think that says it all about E&L!!!
