I usually use a buff that I got from an outdoor shop - not specifically equestrian, silk top/fleece bottom so fits under my hat.

I've also got some ear bags - they are great but I like the scarf of the buff for my neck http://www.earbags.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=45 expensive from the earbag website, but can also get on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Earbags-E...boarding_Clothing_LE&var=&hash=item8266996404 . They fit on your ear and you don't need to attach them to the hat.

oh just a question
With the buffs preferably the polar buff one, do they sit easily covering your chin/mouth? or do you have to pull it up over your nose to prevent it slipping down?
Been trying to ride out with a scarf lately and its just utterly useless as it slides down and gets in the way if anything.

Hmm might just go get a cotton balaclava like on robinsons instead, looks warmerrr.

Don't know if I wear mine correctly or not, it's like a long tube, so I just put it over my head and pull it down to my neck until just my face is poking out of the end. So, my ears and chin are covered, I can pull it up a little if I want my mouth covered. I don't have any problems with it slipping. The fleece bit acts as a scarf.

My sister bought me a north face climbing balaclava. It's quite thin and designed to go under a helmet so it fits under my hat. Really warm, no earache and the flap can be folded down or up to cover nose and cheeks or just chin.
