I'm relatively new to eBaying so this is the first time it has gone wrong for me...

- I bought an item that was not as described (listed as new undamaged etc but actually has part missing making it unusable)
- (private?) seller says it was listed in good-faith and offers to refund what I paid if I return it

Question:
should I ask them to also refund the postage (about 1/3 the cost of the item) that I pay sending it back?

I couldn't find anything making it clear what is supposed to happen.

Ideas on etiquette/rights much appreciated, thanks!

If I remember correctly, when this happened to me, I posted it back to them, and they refunded me the cost of the parcel and original postage to me.

Well established ebayer here :)

Tell them that you are expecting a full refund. Seller sounds honest in that she has agreed to refund, but in case she refuses to refund your p&p back to her and the original refund - you can open a dispute with the seller on paypal.

You have every right to claim back all your costs.

Ebay etiquette is always polite but stern!! Never be too nice!

Agree with nikkimariet- I have bought and sold lots on ebay over the years and would always give a full refund if I sold something not as described (did happen once but it was a genuine and honest mistake so I covered all postage costs etc). You are compleltey within your rights- just open a case with ebay, they are pretty good at sorting these issues out :)

Happened to me...

Hold out for full refund for P&P costs to you, I would pay extra to have a POD.

I was absolutely incensed when a seller sent me something that bore no resemblance to the picture used to advertise it, then had the cheek to only offer me a refund for the purchase price, not either P&P.

As I pointed out, why should you expect me to be out of pocket for your mistake...

I opened a case recently, ebay got me refund of price and p&p originally paid but the cost of returning was down to me, not happy. Item was faulty, person now closed account.

Hate to say it, but the seller doesn't have to refund the return cost postage. It's discretionary. Obviously most want good feedback so offer to, but they DONT HAVE TO.

When you make a PayPal claim, it doesn't even give you the option to ask for the return postage when requesting a refund. You can only ask for a full refund of your original PayPal payment amount.

When I purchased a 2-in-1 7 tog kingsized duvet on eBay back along, but received a great thick one peice 13 tog duvet instead, I obviously didn't want it. It was boxed and heavy to return. Tracked return postage to the seller was actually more than the duvet had cost. At the time PayPal made it clear I wouldn't be able to claim the return postage through them so would have to rely on the Seller's good nature. Sadly, this one didn't have one  I ended up returning it by Royal Mail standard parcel service, untracked, but insured against loss in transit. Cost me about £11.00, I think. Waited a week, heard nothing. I contacted the seller but they claimed they never received it back. Waited a bit longer. The same. After 15 working days I completed the R/M claim form for loss in transit, but got nowhere with them as they send forms to the seller asking for confirmation that the item wasn't received. She wouldn't return the forms, so R/M said there was nothing they could do and I lost my claim. All in all I was well out of pocket having lost the initial payment for the duvet, the return postage AND the duvet itself. Bl**dy ridiculous. Beware!!!!

Had same thing recently, seller sent me pair of boots, totally different size to that stated, promised to pay return postage blah blah then only refunded initial costs so I was a fiver down AND stupidly had left positive as they were being so nice and helpful
However would expect really if sellers mistake they should pay sadly nothing to make them do so
