It had to be done. I've taken the feathers just up to off ground level (as in not dragging on the ground), and his tail up six inches to stop the mud dreadlocks. Easier to oil up too, and to pick the hooves out without filthy hair in them...... that's what I'm telling myself anyway :(

Has anyone else had to take drastic action ? I know they'll be in full bloom again before long, but...

Oh Binky, I can't believe it's come to this *sigh*.

The fields are clay soil, and it's almost impossible to get it off, even with the oil on. The ends of his hair are like the old clay pipes. And it won't be long before it's all so much wetter and clay-ier. I got away with it last year as he was on a sloping paddock.

Urgh, feel rotton.

Haha I was only jokingdon't worry ;) Hairy's managed to pull some of his hinds out, whilst getting a little too flirty with the mare. *gaspshockhorror* I'm in despair. lol.

Just after deciding not to clip out my hairy (thanks for your help Binky01:rolleyes::D) I trimmed her feather to just above ground and straightened off the end of her tail. I resisted tidying up the ends of her mane, as I thought I might ruin it:o It's pretty much constantly in a running plait now though. Much easier for riding with.
We have clay soil too, so I can't wait for the mud to really set in!:( NOT!:D

Thank god it's not just me!! I've spent soooooooooo long getting his hairy bits hairier, but the clay makes it impossible to carry on thru the winter.

HOWEVER, the mane is coming along very nicely, so I can play with that can't I :D

sm xx

We are on clay soil too and every autumn I used to trim my boys tail really short to prevent a huge clump of matted hair/soil/clay/mud - so depressing! I abolutely hated trimming his tail as it was always nearly to the ground, and having it cut to his hocks made him look so unbalanced IMO. Hated doing his feathers too but they always grew back in time for the summer (as did his tail)

Luckily being near the coast our fields are very sandy so only get muddy at the gates so I've not been forced into doing anything drastic!! Although I've given in this year and actually trimmed his beard and even had his mane pulled slighting just to tidy it up....but I draw the line at anyone touching his whiskers and mustach as some have wanted to do!!!:mad:

I'm sure he will grow back by next spring and you'll be glad of the easier time of it over winter.

Sorry to say I am just about to do the same to my little mare.

I think I will leave her tail in tact but her feather will have to be trimmed to avoid dragging in the mud :(.

:eek::eek::eek:

It would save a hell of a lot of time and stinking of PO and S though :p

On the plus side, they do say clay is good for the complexion, which will be a bonus when I slip over in it (again). Who needs a mud pack ?
