EHV-1. Should I be worried?

Yes purbee that's why I asked about the extracts used via digestion given that was your suggested mode of treatment rather than direct application in vitro using cell culture flasks? I was hoping you'd maybe be able to direct me to more info/research given your recommendation.

You have google, use it.
Evidently what ive already posted hasn’t piqued your interest for you to research further yourself.

You bemoan me pasting info from links, then with the other cheek, demand more.

Blimey, I was only asking the question! Of course I can do my own research but from scratch it is something I would put aside several hours to do and need to plan that time.

If I wasn't interested, or have a particular interest in microbiology I wouldn't have asked, but as it's not something I know about and you do why wouldn't I ask you? - It's fairly usual and not rude to ask those with prior knowledge for any pointers in the right direction and for those with said prior knowledge to happily offer it to those interested to facilitate further discussion. As you stated yourself you were opening up the thread to discussion and exploring possibilities I thought you would be happy to do so. Perhaps you could be clearer in future if you are adding things to the discussion that you don't actually want to discuss?

I was also not bemoaning you pasting info from links.

Are all cases still at Crofton? Widmer near me has closed it's doors with a statement about a case in Oxfordshire. Not sure if that's rumour or fact.

Horrendous that there's been 4 deaths. Let's hope it stays contained.

Thanks Nikicb that is one of the most useful explanations in layman’s terms I have seen. Reading that I don’t think I would bother vaccinating unless my whole yard was prepared to do so and I would most defiantly have a blood test done first to make sure the horse was negative before having the inculcation done.

Feel very sorry for the Crofton owners who must be going through hell at the moment.

My farrier wax early yesterday (rareity!?) as one of his clients neighbours had been to Crofton the week before. He told them he wouldn't be going until clear. It will affect a lot of people sadly. I feel very sorry for those who have lost horses.

I just hope it doesn't get out onto the forest, could be devastating for semi-feral stock.

Well apparently the hunt was out on the forest yesterday and the hunt nearest to Crofton had a meet today. They certainly aren’t helping with the stereotypes people have of them ?

I can’t get over your farrier waxing ;)

This is potentially incredibly serious you are doing the right think
in getting professional imput right now .
My yard is private but if it was near here I would lock down .

I am less than quarter of a mile from a largish yard where a horse has been to Crofton and is being tested. Results not back yet. Horses from the yard have been hacking along the lanes close to my field yesterday and today. I wish they wouldn't. Is it really that hard to not ride and lock down for a week or so in January? Luckily I have a private rented yard so can completely contril coming and goings otherwise. Fingers crossed.

Yet 60 plus miles away, folk have closed their yards down!
Madness of those hacking on doorstep until confirmation!

I think there are so very selfish/inconsiderate people around at the moment. There are people still hacking out of yards near me where horses have also been tested. Even when they do have a school available to them. Yes, I do not know their horse and their situation but not hacking out for a few days while you wait for results really isn't very hard.

Also what is everyone's opinion of horse boxes coming in and out of yards on lock down even if they are empty. As two came in and out of a yard near me today that is having horses being tested. I've always had the opinion that when on lock down nothing but your car comes in or out of a yard as the chance of trailers and boxes being contaminated is not one I want to take.

Crofton themselves have a large area of straw in the main gateway, soaked with disinfectant. I guess that’s the only way of making sure vehicles aren’t unknowingly spreading anything.

Crofton are being so good about this terrible situation. I just wished some would take it more seriously as it isn't just an inconvenience to them and just a way to stop them riding, it could be causing their horses and others at serious risk of being infected.

It is a worrying time to say the least .But a heartwarming story to show that the christmas spirit isnt quite dead yet. A local yard yesterday had the kids polishing and plaiting ponys for the local PC dressage competition. Sadly they all put their ponys first and decided not to go. Then someone had a bright if not slightly unorthodox idea . Their own school was marked out quickly as a 40x20 arena (rather than the more luxurious 60x20 it is).The dressage judge from the pony club came along after marking the horses that attended and then took the tests of all the young (and not so young) kids at the yard. A BIG THANK YOU TO THE MID SURREY PONY CLUB AND THEIR DRESSAGE JUDGE .

Depends why. Can’t see a risk in taking lorry to mechanic or for a run or to move furniture.

Be unamused at collecting horses even if came back empty.

This is not a notifiable disease but we all have to be aware of the risks (or lack of risk tbh) Good hygene ,soap and water , goes a long way in disease prevention .A spray of 10% hypochlorite goes a hell of a lot further too

New Forest Horsboxes has cancelled all the their bookings this week. Which I think is a really positive move.

Kingston Maurward ran their BD Dressage yesterday, but have cancelled their clear round jumping on Thursday evening.

A lot of people moaning on local FB group about yards being on lock down. I asked how people were managing their bio-security currently and only 2 people responded. Unfortunately it feels a bit like people have the 'it won't happen to me' mentality.

Have you got a link to the story? I can't find anything about it anywhere. It's rather worrying if it's gone that far up already from it's starting point. :(
I couldn't find anything either, and as I do compete in worcs now and then it would be good to know.

The newly reported EHV-1 case in Worcestershire is not the neurological variant, it’s the abortion variant, but it’s still not a good thing to be about. The AHT only give the county, not the nearest town or city. I got a text alert this morning, so this is all the info I currently have.

A case of EHV-1 abortion has been confirmed in Worcestershire, contact AHT for further advice. Sent by Boehringer Ingelheim

I did look up elsewhere that EHV-1 causes four manifestations of disease in horses, including neurological form, respiratory disease, abortion and neonatal death.

The AHT haven’t yet updated their equine news page to include details of the Worcs case, but here’s a link to it as it stands.

****UPDATED EHV ADVICE from Kings Bounty Equine Practice****

So far the report are that there are still no confirmed cases of Equine Herpes Virus outside of Crofton Manor.

As we continue to work closely with equine vets from other practices across Hampshire and UK specialists in equine medicine and infectious disease, we would like to update you on current advice:

A) For horses that have visited Crofton over the weekend of 21/22 Dec 2019.

These horses are currently outside of the 14 day advised isolation period. These horses are likely to be low risk and isolation at this point is unlikely, but we do still advise close monitoring of these horses and all other horses on the yard. In order to identify if your horse has been exposed to EHV, a one off blood sample should be taken to identify this for clearance.

? For horses that have visited Crofton after 21/22 December and are within the 14 day advised isolation period then these horses should be isolated from other horses on the yard if possible and their temperatures should be taken twice daily for at least 14 days from their visit to Crofton. Yard movements should be ceased.

Gold standard advice is that blood samples and nasopharyngeal swabs should be taken from EVERY horse that went to Crofton, taken as near to the likely exposure date as possible, followed by another 2 weeks later.

C) If there are no horses on the yard that have been to Crofton, then you may continue to hack out and horses can move on and off the yard as normal. If you have any concerns, then monitoring horses' temperatures is a useful way of screening for disease.

We will update you if this changes or if there is further advice from the UK specialists in medicine and infectious diseases.

If you are concerned or wish to chat to one of our vets regarding isolation procedures and sampling, please call them directly on their mobiles or contact the office on 01420 520164.
