I'm in the area of the recent outbreaks, although on a yard which has not hunted, nor have any of the horses on the yard hunted (or indeed even left the yard in the last 10 days)....

We're entered for various competitions over the weekend and I'm concerned that the EHV-1 outbreak is still a risk.

Does anyone know whether there have been any cases which are NOT directly linked to the hunt? i.e. has there already been a spread beyond those which have been in direct contact themselves with the hunt horses?

I don't want to be melodramatic and remain on shut down indefinitely, but I also don't want to risk the horses if there are other cases which would indicate the 14 day shut down for hunting yards hasn't actually contained the disease...

Aarrrgggghhhhh!

I am having exactly the same dilemma thanks to lack of cohesive information and the usual scaremongering... My horses live in an isolated herd and have had no contact with other horses especially hunt horses since well before the end of the hunt season. I am entered for shows (one this weekend near Glos)but undecided as to whether to go especially as friends totally out of area have decided not to risk it.
Worse thing is I know of a number of yards who hunt with the affected packs 3-4 times a week who have done nothing but carry on as normal and taken horses off their yards to shows etc. One is very close and am due to have a lesson there this week so don't know if I should go although the pro running it has carried on as normal (& hunted til end of season)....

I think it's a real shame there's not more openness about cases and someone taking the lead in publishing the information.

You end up relying on facebook postings - which are notoriously unreliable!! I know EHV is not notifable, but the vets involved must be aware of the extent of the spread? It would be good to know whether the spread is actually any further than just horses who've hunted with the relevant packs, or whether it's now a bigger problem.

It would make decisions much easier one way or the other!

Rant over, but I just hate feeling like I'm acting uninformed!

My mare was diagnosed with it in December. Carmarthenshire area, never has direct contact with any other horses apart from my own. None of my other horses caught it.
Friend in Ceredigion (10 miles from me) her mare also was diagnosed with it.

From all the research I have done, many horses are carriers (often passed through dam) and they will never show symptoms or shed the virus, some unlucky ones will.

A horse in Aberdeen has been confirmed with EHV (though I believe perhaps the strain is not confirmed) after attending BD at Myerscough on 10th March. Other dressage horses are also confirmed apparently. There is a thread in C&T regarding the Blue Chip finals. It's not confined to the hunt outbreak any more.

The following information from the AHT may be helpful to you.
