Electric Fence Energiser

I am confused! At the moment I use a Gallagher S16 energiser on a 1.5 acre paddock, but I'm due to move field and want to make sure it's really really secure with the electric fence.

I've read the output joule should ideally be 0.5 to 1 joule for horses, but the Gallagher solar energiser all seem to be under that, or am I understanding it wrong.

I'm going to need to secure a 3 acre boundary with double tape. I'll use my S16 for shorter internal fences, but would like advice on a suitable energiser for the boundary fence please. Ideally solar as there is no mains electricity and I could do without having to lift heavy batteries. Thanks

I really like the Gallagher solar energisers and have both the s20 and s30, which between them are supplying all of the electric rope separating the internal paddocks over 10 acres (split into 13 small fields). I haven’t quite got the brain power to work out the distance but it’s long. I haven’t tested the output for a while but know from experience that it zaps quite hard…

Thanks. I must be doing something wrong with my S16, It zaps but not very hard ( tho the horses haven't realised that lol).

Make sure there is nothing touching it and that it's pretty damp around your earth stake. I find that makes the most difference for mine. I've had my s16 for a long time and it still gives a decent belt I've discovered to my cost!

Edit from previous post: I’d calculate that I have about 2.2km of fencing (double stranded, so 4.4km) with those two energisers, about half connected to each. The s30 is meant to be able to power 3km.

Thanks Abacus, this is really useful, think I'll stick with Gallagher and check my current fence to see what I'm doing wrong before I move to my new plot. Thanks too for working out the length if tape your system feeds.
