I'm currently using electric fencing which which is powered by two 1.5v batteries...now the pony has very little respect for this and has gone through it twice in the last week taking the foal with him and I.m worried that 1. They are going to hurt themselves and 2. Foal will pick up bad habits

So my questions forgive me for being a numpty so

1. If I get a energiser which uses a car battery 12v will this give a more powerful shock or does it mean it can just power a greater length of fence??

2. Does anyone use the 5ft posts rather than the 3ft ones do you think that would be better at stopping ponio barging through??

3. Could anyone recommend me a energiser and where best to buy on from??

4. Any tips on stopping pony being a twonk

Oh, I do sympathise.

I often wondered what my boy was up to when I wasn't around so decided to watch him one day. With the energiser on and tape 'live' he proceeded to pick the bottom of the fence posts up between his teeth, throw them on the floor and leap over the tapes. I called out to him, put the posts back in place and hid once more. He did it within five minutes of me 'leaving'.

I guess the moral is 'where theres a will ...' The only solution I have is to put fence posts into the ground.

Sorry, can offer no practical advice but wanted to reassure you you are not alone. xx

we used to have mains electric fencing years ago - obviously it was regulated!

You can get 'kangaroo' electric fencer units - infact I think my dad is selling one for about £50. PM me if you're interested.

I have found with ours, if the posts are higher than they are then they are less likely to go through it, if you get the longer post they have a tendency to bend if you use them on corners, so get the bit
that goes with them for corners ( dont know what they're called tho). If you are fencing a long straight peice i would go with wood fence poles with thicker tape, this is what we do for a longer bit of fencing.

We use a leisure battery and havent had a problem. It gives quite a belt too. We also use the 5ft fence posts but buy the best quality you can as they do bend a bit in the wind. We use wooden fence posts as a permanent fixture every so often and on corners to stabilise the fence with the plastic posts in between. Our fence has been up about 3 yrs now with no real problems. Oh we had an older energiser that broke so I needed one straight away and had little choice but bought the dearer one from Robinsons, its been fantastic. We put a bucket over it though to protect it from the worse of the weather and we dont use the on off switch as its a bit awkward, we just take the red clip off the battery instead.

we found with our original houdini that if you put fence posts close together (no more than 3ft) then he didnt try to get through because he used to sort of run through sideways, head down and at an angle. This doesnt work with our current houdini mark 2 - he goes through anything and everything and is currently the bain of my life, electric, hedge, 4 strands of barbed wire - just walks straight through and lifts his legs at appropriate moment, he is our prize show colt and how he isn't covered in cuts and scars I just dont know. They do learn to do it from others and even our mains didnt stop either of them. we are going to have to resort to post and rail before spring to ensure he stays where we put him. He is usually in another field within minutes of turn out and this morning we hadnt even got out of the field before he was with his friend in the other livery's field.
