I need to get a battery pack for my paddock since I am making smaller paddocks in my big paddock and now they've eaten all the grass from the outskirts of the field I need to go in to the middle, so I need to buy another battery pack.

Whats the highest voltage I can use and whats the best battery pack to buy?

My fence runs of two D batteries (through a regulator)which is more than enough for a powerful zap (if your horses respect de fence

) but when new foal arrived I was worried about him not respecting the zap (he does) but I did a google search which tells you the highest voltage...and also tells you the recommended voltage for your fence length hope you get all this as I'm rambling LOL

sorry for the delay!

depends on your energiser assuming it is one that has an external battery then a 12v battery. You should use a leisure battery rather than a car battery, although a bit more they will last longer as they are desinged for caravans etc and hence are designed to be run all the way down before recharging. Car batteries in comparison are designed to be constantly topped up and don't do well being run down completely. When I used to run the elec fencing section of country store we had 2 sizes, a smal and a large, think small was £37, bigger one was about £50 but this was a few years back

The fencers that charlies army mentioned with the 2D batteries will give enough zap if you aren't expecting them to go very far/using thick tape.

My fence runs off either a 12V leisure battery or a 9V PP8 battery (which sits internally) so depends what fencer you have

just another addition, it doesn't matter what the voltage input to the fencer is, ie your not going to over zap your horse (hence why you can plug fencers into the mains) the fencer will sort out the output.

as neilM said the more expensive batteries with higher amp/hours will last longer between charges.

Ummm, watch the 'mains' bit.

The fencer will either be designed to run from a battery or from battery / mains. If you connect a battery only type to the mains, you are likely to blow it up.

Battery = 12 volts DC
Mains = 240 volts AC
 
you need a fencer unit and a battery to power it depending on the fencer unit. How much in meters are you powering I might be able to make a suggestion!

What were you using before when you say 'conductors'?
 
oh yes you have to have a mains fencer to plug it into the mains, they come with plugs the others don't, they just have 2 connectors to attach to battery.
 
Okay um.........two paddocks with tape dividing them, total perimeter approx 150 meters.......maybe a little less, maybe a little more. I am rubbish with distance - can you tell

My logic is I had two rolls of tape of 200 meters each, probably got about 1/4 left on each roll. hmmmm although maybe more than that

The conductor things I was talking about are the plastic handles that hook over the fence, you know what you use to get in and out? They are probably called something completely different

ah yes I see handles on to already electrified fence., get that now,

ok well thats not a huge distance say we are not far off 400m so you can either go for something like this, the shrike is an example of one powered by the 2x D cell batteries and as you can see supposedly does 800m, but I would assume that was for think wire, it takes more to power tape. You would also have to buy a earthing stake, so red wire connects to fence, green to the earth. They are the cheapest and easy to move about as v small but am not convinced how good they are as haven't seen many in action

The sprite is an example of a fencer that can do diff batteries. It will either have a 9v PP8 internally about a tenner a time- I use these on ours last about 4 months fencing a 4.5 acre field. or a 12v leisure battery that will sit externally and can be recharged but obv then you need a charger aswell.

The ones with stands act as their own earth (you clip the green one onto the stand) but in this dry weather I use a separate earth stake instead as it goes deeper.

I hope that maybe helps?? we also used to supply gallagher fencers aswell but my internet is too slow to go through those too!
