I would like them banned. They are cruel

For what reason do you think they are cruel? Out of interest would you also like to see equine electric fencing and cattle electric fencing banned too?
Electric fencing and electric "training" collars are hardly the same... the cattle/horses do not choose to repeatedly zap their noses/backsides on the fencing...they choose to stay away from it.... whereas if someone puts these things round a dogs neck, it is the owner who choses to zap the dog, as and when needs be... Except there are cruel gits out there who would zap the poor dog will-nilly in the name of "entertainment" to see the dog squirm....
yes, i dont like them, i had a training collar on but the spray one.. used it once did not need it again. they are far kinder. i wouldnt want to be zapped around my neck so nor should a dog.
is this the training ones or boundry fence ones or both? i think the training ones should be banned but the fence ones are okay as long as the dog learns quickly. may seem hypocritical but meh.

I think they're cruel because it is around their neck. Also once it zapps them they can't run away from it whereas equine/cattle fencing can be ran away from
Agree with AnimalLover... if my dog has aleady had a sting from an electric fence, she ran and ran squealing as she went... if she had one of these round her neck, she'd end up a quivering wreck...
a dog on my yard has one, he doesn't look very happy wearing it..
And apparently they are banned now, so not really much point in going further!
I agree that in the wrong hands they are dodgy but then as most of you will know number one is just a noise and a vibration so you should be able to train the dog on that alone. I have felt number 2 and thats a tickle, I don't have a double coat either!
I think they should be banned to the public but available to certain people (I'll remind you that both the police force and army use them regularly during training).
I don't use mine on my girls we bought it a few years ago for the GSD and I couldn't even tell you where it is (haven't seen it since we moved).
How would you guys stock proof an animal? I'm talking a working animal, a lurcher for instance?
I know and agree with MFH_09's method regarding chicken but if the above posts disagree with the collar I'll doubt you agree with that either. And I'm asking regarding sheep and lambs?

My god you've obviously never seen or felt the collar. I'm a wimp at electric fences!! Yet I smiled at number 2 on the collar, it tickled. An electric fence shock is the equivelent to about a number 10 on the collar and if you get upto that there's something up with your training methods!
And cow electric fencing run off of the mains...well I've only ever touched that once (stupidly aged 14) and it put me flat on my back!
I know someone who used one on her dachshund to "cure" his problem barking. All it did was make him nervy and frantic. She threw it in the bin, and then spent $1000 on a trainer trying to undo his old problems and the new ones caused by the bark collar.
Personally, if my dog is ever playing up, the last resort I use is a squirt from a water bottle. Same effect, I suppose, but far more humane.
Nope havent felt the collar...but i have seen it.... the stones in a drinks bottle is far better. with a quick loud resounding No.... this is how she was trained not to do certain things....
unsure- it depends on wether they seriously harm the dogs health and wether they're welfare is at risk. never seen them or seen then in use the the name of them sounds pretty nasty!
I believe an electric collar is only as cruel as the person using it. I have seen one in use and tried the collar's "shock" on myself- it actually felt like a TENS machine, not an electric fence. A tickly feeling, really. Certainly not painful. But of course it could be used to administer a whacking great shock in the wrong hands.
My opinion is that ANYTHING can cause a dog pain when used incorrectly whether it be an electric collar, a choke chain, a normal flat collar or the palm of a hand. I wouldn't actually like to see them banned as I know of people who have used them to great effect (on sheep-chasers and the like, where the dog's life is endangered by its behaviour) but I would like a better general understanding of HOW they work and how they should be used; perhaps only used under the supervision of a suitably qualified trainer. The comparisons made to electric fencing indicate most people do not fully understand how these collars work.
A post I'd completely agree with, finally someone with a bit of knowledge on the subject, an open mind, but also a person with care for the dog at heart.
I still haven't received an answer regarding stock proofing without the use of electric collars, no farmer will hesitate to shoot a dog who is threatening his livestock.
Should be licenced to own/use them but as with everthing that has a licence there are ways & means around them.
The collar only gives one short zap when you press the button even if you hold the button down it wont keep zapping you have to release the button & press again after so many seconds..
Also like anything that is made in this world can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Like riding especially schooling whips for instance Ive seen horses with nasty whelp marks after the owner/rider has lost their rag with it so should whips/spurs be banned????
I have had one used on my dog by an expert dog trainer (she use to chase sheep didnt attack just played when they stopped running as cornered she would leave them) But that alone can do enough damage to stock I know I'm a farmer. So this was last resort for stopping her. I had the collar put on me & was zapped at all 5 settings only felt in fair. She got zapped 3 times in total & can now walk through any stock without a lead or ANY kind of collar on & will not even look at them. If she hadn't had it happen to her I would of shot her if she had chased stock ever again. So the collar SAVED her life.
NO ! - the Kennel Club has actively campaigned to have them banned - and it will be illegal to use one after the animal welfare bill comes into force next April .....it is ( in my opinion) never right to train by inflicting fear or pain ....it may not feel like pain to you but if it was not painful for the dog why would it work ? ... there are effective kinder ways of teaching a reliable recall and to be frank if your dog is not safe around stock then he/she should be kept away from them either in an enclosed area or on the lead !
