Ellie and I had an accident on the road today...

Hope you're both ok, OP. The police should take this very seriously, since you actually had an accident and his lorry hit your horse. It is indeed an offence to leave the scene of an accident, as somebody else has pointed out. I'm also amazed the tractor driver didn't stop and see if you were both ok. :(

Oh God, not the lovely Ellie. So glad she seems to be OK. You and your friend were very definitely very lucky. Having had something similar happen to me last year I relived that horrifiying moment just now by reading your post.

Lots of ((((((((((((((get mended quickly vibes)))))))))) and good luck ones with the police trying to trace this braindead idiot who seems to be in charge of a killing machine. Hope you can track him down and he gets some sort of punishment.

Please take photos of your horses injuries, get your horse checked out by a vet and also make a statement to the police. It is important that you ask the police for a police incident number as this will ensure that it is recorded on the system.

The police should be able to identify the driver concerned.

Could you also report this accident to the BHS by downloading this form:
http://www.bhs.org.uk/Riding/Riding...ly/Road Safety/Road Accident report form.ashx

It is important that every accident is reported to the BHS so that they can compile statistics of horse related road accidents and use them when negotiating with the government and local authorities to get improved safety measures put in place.

If your horses behaviour towards traffic etc changes then you can seek compensation from the driver by taking out a private prosecution (whether the police succesfully prosecute the driver or not).

Oh my life. That sounds like it could have been so much worse. Thank goodness you're all ok. Hope you can track down the driver.

Police - report it

Do you know the company the lorry belonged to? They all have trackers and if you can give them the time and place....they can find it

Apalling beyond belief thatt he driver simply left - not acceptable and should be reported

You wouldn't seek compensation via a private prosecution, you would make a civil claim. If you have insurance then they will probably help you with this. In fact you can make a claim for any out of pocket expenses you suffer (replacement of hat, BP, vet bills, first aid equipment, etc), for any diminution in the value of your horse, and for any injuries you suffered even if only minor.

If you want further info about this PM me, I work for a law firm that deals with claims like this (although I'm not touting for business as the firm I'm at now wouldn't take your case).

Dear god in heaven

I am so glad that neither you nor Ellie seem to have been too badly hurt by this mindless moron that passes for a lorry driver

I agree with others who say take pics of injuries, both yours and Ellies, as well as of the scene

Hope you are not too sore and it doesn't knock your confidence on the roads

(((hugs))) for you and <<vibes>> for Ellie

Actually, you should get the vet - because if this goes any further with the police, you will need the vet to attest to the injuries sustained by the horse........

I totally agree.

make sure you take plenty of pictures as well, especially if you can find a way to get the date in the picture somehow (don't use a calendar as you could in theory show any date you wanted).

So glad you are all safe, i can't believe how irresponsible some drivers can be. Hope Ellie's legs heal quickly.
Hope you do take it further with the police and the moron driving gets caught. It may prevent some other poor person meeting him in his lorry and they might not be so lucky.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to give everyone an update. Firstly, thank you SO much for all the replies - I never expected so many, so thank you all for thinking of us!

Most importantly, Ellie appears to be ok. We turned her out this morning after we got back, and she has come in this evening a little bit sore, but thankfully not lame. There wasnt even much swelling in her hocks (although they do look painful, poor girlie :( ) and so tonight we've just put some more cream on. She's due her annual jabs any time soon, so I will book her in for the end of this week if possible and get the vet to take a look at her hocks at the same time :o

Mum and I went to the police station to give our statement earlier. At the same time, I asked if it would be unwise to ring the company whose lorry I suspected it was, and the policewoman said that there was nothing to stop me doing so. So, we rang them up - and the guy we spoke to knew exactly who and what we were talking about, and was very helpful. We gave him our phone number, and he promised we'd get a call back.
Ten minutes later, my brother rang to say that the lorry driver himself had phoned. He left his name and number, and gave my bro some spiel about 'I could see the girl at the front was out of control' (but he didnt bother to stop, did he!?!? ) and said if I wanted to call him, I could. Naturally, I havent - but I have passed on his details to the police, so I guess its in their hands now!

Thank you again, to everybody x

So pleased, great news ! Just a suggestion, but can you get photos of the legs today or tomorrow - just so the injuries are as "fresh" as possible. Do keep us posted. sm x

Im glad you are both relatively unscathed - my father works for the property development side of the company you mentioned, and if it was indeed them, I hope they give you all the help you need and are not obstructive. Poor Ellie.

Thank god you are both ok, I hope the company do something to say sorry and pay more attention in future. Hope your horse recovers quickly. x

Ive only just read this, jeez that must have been terrifying, glad your both ok and not too hurt. Hope the police do something keep us updated.

I'm glad to hear that you are both relatively OK. I do think that you should contact your vet, in case you need someone to witness the injuries. The police should certainly follow up this incident. It is against the law to leave the scene of an accident if there are injuries, or to not notify the police about it within 24 hrs. Your friend is a witness to the accident, although of course the tractor driver could have seen something useful. Did he check that you were both ok?

That sounds horrendous, so good to hear you are all ok, no thanks to the utter idiot that caused this. It must have been very scary for all involved. I hope you manage to nail him for this and that he doesn't get away with it

That beggars belief that a) he would drive off and b) tell his company (I assume) that he knew he'd hit a horse and had a rider off if the company were able to work out exactly who it was when you rang. I just despair of the way the world is going. Relieved you are both OK. Hope Ellie heals quickly and is none the worse on the roads for her trauma.

OMG what a horrible accident - my heart was in my mouth just reading that. Thank god you are all more or less in one piece and I hope the injuries are just superficial.

When I was about 13 and my sister 10 she had a nasty accident when her pony jumped up a similar bank to get away from something out hacking. I dread riding on such roads as since then I'm so aware that there's no escape if a vehicle comes towards you and can't stop in time.

I hope the police catch the pr*ck and do something about it and I wish Ellie a speedy recovery and hope there is no lasting damage done to any of you. Some people are just beyond belief.

OMG, so glad you are okay!!
What a complete
Hope he gets whats coming to him, if not by the police then by my dear friend Karma

The hairs are standing up on the back of my neck - how horrible for you :(

Hope that you aren't too sore and you and your ponies recover from this xxx

Bloody dreadful  glad you are both (reasonably) ok X

Hopefully even if the police dont end up doing anything, the driver will be more careful in future

Don't know if this has already been said, but a vehicle that size should have a tachograph in the cab, the firm will know which vehicle took that root and the tacho should show the speed he was going at, if you can pinpoint the time.
Hope you are both ok and that neither of you are too stiff tomorrow, do you now need to replace your BP?

I'm really sorry to hear this, I am currently in the middle of getting a story together wth one of our local reporters about some recent horse related accidents on the road to try and educate drivers when they pass horses in the road.

Hope you and ponio are ok, what a fright!
