You did the right thing, stop beating yourself up about it.
At 16 years old she should have been mature enough to at least talk to you when you went round, that is very immature and certainly not something I would allow a child of mine to get away with.
Of course she is bound to be upset but you are not dealing with a 10 year here so she needs to stop being a baby about it.
You have offered her a reference & been as kind as possible in the circumstances.
In the end it does come down to the fact that it is your horse and he is there for your enjoyment you should not feel guilty for doing what is right for you and him.
