Had my mare scanned on Tues & the vet found her right ovary was huge. He basically couldn't get his hand around it, whilst doing a rectal exam, so we're thinking melon/football sized. :( It is also causing her significant pain as even under sedation she was arching her back & trying to get away from the vet's hand & the scanner.
Blood tests came back today but hormone levels are normal! I've read a bit about GTC tumours & along with her aggressive behaviour & cresty neck, I was expecting to see high testosterone levels.
The vet has recommended another scan in 10 days to see if the ovary has shrunk back to normal size & if it has then to put her on Regumate.
Her left ovary was normal. She is 9 & nearly always suffers with colic-type tummy ache symptoms mid-cycle. Can be very grumpy, almost lame behind (fairy steps) , sore-backed to brush & girth up & will throw some horrendous bucks at this time.
Any experience of similar experiences would be appreciated! :)

Taz had the same some years ago and I had the same fears of a tumour (Her ovary was bigger than the scanner screeen !!!!!) She had hormones to try get her to ovulate but that didnot work. The situation eventually resolved and then she was on regumate ...... but despite that the situation recurred agian ...and again .

the diagnosis was persistant anovulatory follicles........ basically the follicles (eggs) dont get released from the ovary and it swells up ..... mare is trying to come properly into season but cant.

they can be in a lot of pain from the pulling on the suspensory ligaments as well as hormones being up the shute .... we had had symptoms very like your mare's and Taz's behaviour was badly affected .....sheis normally such a calm mare it was heartbreaking to see her so distressed at times.

She now has a marble in her uterus to try and stop her coming into season ..... is hasn't stopped them totally but they are not as frequent and so far * touches wood * she has not had a paf since (2-3 years).

I do so hope that you get firm diagnosis and resolution soon :)

pm me if you want as I dont always get the time to go through the list of threads ;)

Think we may have had a breakthrough thos morning! Orla let me brush her all over without her trying to kill me!! ;)
She still wouldn't go forward on the lunge but is 100 times better than yesterday. 2nd scan booked for 31st, so we'll be able to see what's going on. :)

Orla had a 2nd scan today! Ovary is still huge but not quite as large as it was & is not as painful now. However, her left ovary has a large follicle on it that is causing pain instead! :( Vet has put her on Regumate & will test blood for inhibin levels. Fingers crossed that it works for her. Poor ponio, only had 3 pain-free days in a fortnight! :(
