Warning this is very long!
I like to be open minded about things and my problems with Enys have led me to try out some unusual options. This has to be the most unusual by far.
Yesterday I had a horse communicator come out to see Enys. She was recommended by my RI (who has her do her horse) and is quite well reknowned for her abilities (she goes abroad and does lots of famous people's horses).
If you have a look at my past posts you will see that when I bought Enys there were no signs of behaviour problemsbut on our way home after picking him up he jumped over the partition in the horsebox and had to be cut and dragged out - since then he bites and kicks(see here for full story)
Anyway - I was a little nervous as I didn't know what to expect.
I can't give you a definitive answer as to whether she is the real thing but alot of things she said were very accurate. This is a quite detailed report:
It was different from what I expected though, as I imagined it would be all about things Enys likes doing and what he doesn't like doing...However it was all about Enys' physical health. (my RI says that she didn't tell the lady anything about Enys)
I didn't give her any info on Enys, not his name (piror to session) or age or anything about his accident. To start with she did call Enys a 'she' but Enys is a girls name and you can't always differentiate a human from their voice. She was talking to his bottom over his stable door (he decided to be anti-social) but the first thing she said was that his rib cage hurt. From where she was standing she wouldn't have been able to see his war wounds caused by his accident.
After a bit she decided to go in with him - I had kept silent about his behavioural problems as I wanted to see if she picked up on it. I went in with her to fend off his nashers, as she didn't know and would be unprepared. Of course Enys was nasty (as he is in his box) and after a bit of dodging it was decided she best see him outside his box.
This showed me one thing...Enys is definetly more comfortable with me now, as I can go in his box without a huge amount of problems (though I have to be wary). He does dislike strangers.
So she began trying to interpret and translate Enys' problems (typical man only grumbled about his problems!). She used alot of noises to try and explain what Enys felt. I have to say she was pretty spot on with what she described in what was wrong with his movement (she hadn't seen him walk). I gave her no clues that she was on the right track.
She said that his problems started with 'seven' and she said that due to the way horses talk she couldn't tell whether it was when he was seven or if it was seven months. Enys is only just six, so it wasn't his age, but it does happen to be exactly seven months since his accident. Whether this is coincidence I don't know.
She said this seven was important to him as he saw everything that happened before this 'seven' as behind him (I hadn't confirmed at this point that seven was a special significance to us). He said since then he has not been comfortable and so is unable to move his back leg as he wants. He said it was better when the lady came to see him twice with 'three' between. - He saw the physio about six times after his accident but in April I called out the chiro, who did a huge straightening job on his spine and then she came out again 'three' weeks later...Again coincidence? I don't know. So this helped but Enys didn't think it had helped enough and wanted her to come again (she's booked for two weeks time).
He said he didn't like any of his saddles (he has been through two since I got him seven months ago - all professionally fitted and adjusted several times, though he quickly outgrew them) and this hasn't helped him. The one at the moment doesn't fit perfectly but my saddler has none left! Due to this he doesn't feel like concentrating on me all the time and makes him feel unbalanced and rush forwards or 'jar' in trot.
This is true as he does sometimes feel a bit stilted and doesn't use his behind properly - although he does move well. The lady said he takes the contact but doesn't like bringing his back legs under, particularly his off-hind (correct).
Then she said to me "But he does like it when you have the two reins on him when you're not riding...It's not side reins but something like long reins?" I started long reining Enys last week after the horse behaviourist said that this would be good for our bonding. He does enjoy it and is good at it (depsite having a clumsy handler).
Back to his health (he didn't diverge from this for long!). He said his chest felt heavy and this meant that he felt tight...but this was a result of his rib cage/stomach problems. I was actually told the exact same thing by a reiki lady a month ago (I told you i've tried everything!) but he does stand a little top-heavy when you look at him.
The lady, who also is a qualified herbalist, said that his stomach is very acidy and although he doesn't have gastric ulcers it is very close to them...and that makes him very grumpy. My mum and I very nearly got him scoped last month for ulcers but the vets said that he would be grumpy to ride if that was the case. So this just confirms what we half suspected. He also said once he felt very 'colicy', this was around the same time as the 'seven' - when he first came to us he wouldn't eat anything but grass...so perhaps that is what he was talking about?
Enys said that since the 'seven' he has felt panicy and goes to bite because he is uncomfortable. This tallies up with how we would describe his behaviour, as he is a sweet horse, he just goes for you randomly (you can see my past posts that verify this). He also said he didn't like it that I was giving up on him....Ok so that made me feel really guilty because it is true. We had a really bad two days at the weekend and I have told him quite a few times that he has the winter to proove himself.
You may think I am mean but at the end of the day we want all our horses to be our friends - we aren't really very competitive (though i'd like to be) and I want to be able to enjoy spending time with my horse and when that said horse is trying to bite and kick you it isn't exactly enjoyable. I can't even brush him without being wary.
Then he said that before the 'seven', he had been at the same place twice after someone had given up on him! Well I bought Enys from an ISH dealer and I have suspected that he may have been at the yard longer than I thought and that he may have been sent back by someone else. I can tell by his hooves that he has been moved quite a bit (he has quite a few ridges). Poor boy!
I was starting to get a little dissapointed because there hadn't really been any mention of his accident. Now the next bit I am a little bit skeptical about because my RI phoned her. I had told my RI that she was coming out and my RI phoned, during the session, to ask her if, as she was in the area, could she drop some herbs off. So they started chatting on the phone about Enys' problems with his movement. I didn't mind as I think my RI will be able to understand better what the lady was talking about and will be able to help me to work on it in our lessons.
Then whilst I was listening to her speaking to my RI, I hear her mention Enys accident and how he showed her it was like a "shunt, he was pushed forward" (shunt indeed, the silly boy reared up over the parititon!
). Now I didn't mention the accident but I asked my RI and she said she did mention his accident on the phone but not what type of accident. So I am afraid this part is a little iffy. However the lady said to me afterwards that Enys doesn't really regard the accident as important, only that after it was when his stomach began hurting. This could be true, as Enys hasn't ever really shown any problems in the box and loaded first time after his accident. it is only me who seems to be a nervous nelly around the box now!
I still hadn't told her that the accident was in the horsebox - so I said to her "Do you want to know about his accident" to which she said yes. Then before I opened my mouth, she said "Was it to do with the horsebox?" - so either she guessed correctly or Enys did actually tell her. Who knows!
So after all of this we chatted for a bit and I asked her whether she could see if he saw anything positive about his life...as it all just seemed to be all negative and nothing really about how he saw me.
So she asked him and she said "Have you changed girths recently" - yep I have. "He likes his new girth, it's better than the old one."....I am beginning to think my horse is very self centred
. Then he told her that at one point in his life he didn't have any water or the water was bad but now he likes the water.
So we have various lotions and potions to do with his stomach - then she said it was important that I got the saddle sorted soon, as Enys was getting a bit annoyed with it.
So do I believe it all?
Yes I suppose I do to a point, as alot of it was very accurate...although there were a few things I didn't quite understand.
Would I have her out again? Yes I think I would - she said enough for me to be impressed, even if it was things I have guessed at myself.
Phew....Long post but alot of people have read about my problems with Enys and so it is interesting to hear the whole report of the session rather than a condensed one. You can read all about my trials and tribulations with Enys on my blog...which I have religiously updated.
(nb. Please no nastiness about horse communicators - I was in two minds whether to post this report, but thought that it might interesting for some people
)
