Equest paramox wormer

This was mine the morning after using Equest Pramox. At the time of taking this video I thought he might be tying up, linked to his RER, but he was actually colicing badly, I believe because of this product. I will never use it again. My sister has just wormed with it having fed protexin prior with no problems on the other 3, but I won’t touch it now.

My horse had a huge adverse reaction to Pramox, it seemed a bit like an allergic reaction. He started to drool, then his legs buckled and he was very dazed. It came on within a couple of minutes of worming. I didn't call the vet because in all honesty I thought he would be dead before the vet arrived. After about 5 minutes the symptoms disappeared as quickly as they came on and there were no lasting side effects. I will never use Pramox again on any horse.

Exactly the same reaction as mine, I thought she was going to collapse to the floor, very frightening. She recovered fine but I'm also not using it ever again.

I left a yard over it when YO was mandating a dose of pramox. Mine had received equest about 8 weeks previously and then had no eggs seen FEC and a clear equisal. She told me that it was irrelevant and we all had to fall into line.

In fairness there were other issues but that was the straw that broke the camels back. Such irresponsible use of wormers, for one thing, and I absolutely refused point blank to use pramox when 2 separate doses could be done anyway.

Doing some sums.

To get my 3 neds dosed for tapeworm (horses weigh 525kg, 525kg, 650kg) I have the choice of buying 3 syringes of eqimax, which has praziquantel for tapes but also ivermectin which is unnecessary for the rest of my worming regime, and will cost £36.12.

Or to double dose them by buying 6 syringes of Strongid P, with some creative dosing as each syringe only treats a 600kg horse cf 700kg, which will cost £51.54.

I can’t understand why praziquantel is still available packaged up in Pramox, with all its known issues, but not as a stand-alone. Bonkers.

I've written this before, but I was advised years ago, at a chance meeting, by the Rep who worked for the company that makes it, never to use moxidectin and praziquantel in one worming because of the number of adverse reactions that they get reported to them.

Ivermectin/praziquantel does not have the same problems, which is just as well now praziquantel can't be bought alone.

.
I didn't think there was a moxidextin only wormer. Which one is it? I've got two youngsters bought from Ireland, both had been wormed with Equest, but I'm convinced they are still wormy, judging by their coats. I like Equimax, but it doesn't do encysted.

Three horses on my yard (Including mine) recently had a mild laminitus attack - from how their hooves have grown down the event line seems to tie up with when they were wormed with this back in November.

From now on, when we worm we start a dose of Trniity L94 a few days before worming and then continue the 10 days of L94.

We are worming with 5 day pancur now and then worm counting for summer!

equest is moxidectin only however, whilst I appreciate worm counts don't included encysted, why not do a worm count and see if they really do have a worm problem and also an equisal test to see if tapeworm is your problem. This along with a dose of equest to sort encysted (once you have got your results and know what you are dealing with) would be a good starting point.

Westgate labs are very knowledgeable and helpful for this. I had a rescue pony filly who was returning high WECs despite being wormed according to manufacturers guidelines. They gave me a tailored worming programme for her and were very proactive in answering questions. No charge except, of course, I used them for the worm counts :).

ETA Westgate asked me if they could use my foster filly as a case history. This is her under an assumed name (which IMHO suited her rather better than her real one!).

Yes, I lost my mare to colic 24 hours after worming with Pramox. She had colicked with it before but survived and (sadly) I foolishly didn't associate the colic with the wormer because it was (again) 24 hours in between. Second time wasn't so lucky :(

It was a crappy, horrid day and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. If I ever have horses again, I wouldn't touch Pramox (or Equest) if it was the last wormer on the planet.

Sorry for your loss Sport Horse, it's really awful to lose them this way :(

Sorry you lost your horse x

yes I was horrified at t he price of Strongid P. Although I equisal for tapes so I don't have very many to do I would still like to be able to buy praz. on it's own for anyone who needs it. I don't want to use ivermectin in a combined wormer, I would rather keep it for if I had a problem.

Re yr last post I would also recommend Westgate for advice. There seem to be lots of comments on here from people who just don't know where to start. All you have to do is go on the Westgate site and read the various articles and worming programs. An hour spent doing this and for the majority of horses you will have an answer and a worming prog.
