I have also put this in new lounge... but I know many of you in here have had to deal with leg injuries of some kind so thought I might get more replies

Does anyone own a set of these and if so have you used them for dressing surgical wounds?

They are nice pads, don't get as mucky as fybergee and are easy to wash.

They wouldn't be used to dress surgical wounds though, you would need sterile stuff for that

Yes, they are great, we have used them for numerous injuries, generally to cover wound with dressing on and probably with softban over that and then vetwrap - so not directly on a wound. Nice as they have towelling trpe inside so get get sweaty like some more synthetic coverings

Thank you... what is 'softban'???

Grace goes in for her PSD operation and someone has suggested investing in some of these so that I can ensure the would is kept clean and it is easier than other methods because you can use it for a longer period (ie. bandage a little longer)

The vets should already bandage

Spider had almost like a cast on both her hinds, she had very thick bandages on.

Also I meant to ask are you having both hinds operated on?

Most ppl suggested even if only one injured the other was bound to go at some point as its usually caused by a weakness in the hind leg confirmation

Yes, she is having both operated on for this reason

Did you just leave these bandages on? The person I was talking to suggested them because they have to be cleaned every day

Well this isnt what I was told, Spider had her bandages on for 10days - the vet said if they slip at all to call them and they would come and re-do but they didnt they were fine.

They were very heavy duty from the fetlock up to the hock, about an inch over the cut at the top

Is the person you spoke to a vet?
Your horse is going in for surgery, the vets will bandage her up for you, those bandages will probably need to be changed every few days. They won't want it exposed daily and risk infection.

No, the person is not a vet but someone who has had the surgery done on their own horse. I think it was in the evening, perhaps after the initial dressing had been removed in that case...

They bandaged Spider then after 2 days she come home so they re did them for her to come home and said if they slip to call but they didnt, then when they come off the wounds looked great, they were just left with nothing on

Mac was the same as the others on here very thick bandages on when he came home and left on. We're changed by the vet nurse who came out to do it at set intervals.

I wouldn't recommend using these for a leg thats been operated on/surgical wound as you need something that is sterile that can be thrown away after use- As someone said above, Soffban bandages are good for this however I'd ask the Vets re Bandaging- most vets normally send the horse home with a whole bag load of dressings and bandages if they need them .

As ive said! I really wouldnt worry, Spiders didnt need re-doing but if they do which will be once at the most probably you can just call your vet out to do it.

Thanks... can you tell the panic is setting in.

Only tomorrow to go and then I am taking her on Wednesday morning complete with individual bags of feed for her breakfasts and teas

Soffban is like rolls of very thin cotton stuff, so that you can pad excessively but evenly, so you don't get a lumpy overlap like you would with gamgee.
You'd need to use this after a non-adhesive sterile pad of some kind, held in place with a crepe bandage, then the soffban (as many rolls as necessary) and then another crepe for support if wanted, and then finally the outer bandage.

Don't panic, the vet will give you full instructions when she is discharged of what to do. If you have to change the dressings, which I did every 3 days, a nurse will show you what to do, & they will send you home with everything you need. As someone else said, you wouldn't be able to use these pads, as the dressings have to be sterile & you throw away the ones you remove. Honestly, you will be fine, & you can always call the vets for advice.

Softban is what vets tend to put on over the dressing on a wound - very soft gauzy bandage that you cant do too tight if you try (as it tears). They are very cheap to buy, and very useful between a sterile dressing andvetwrap or whatever you use to keep it in place. Well worth keeping in stock! We even reuse them when used over a poultice dressing.
