Firstly I have to apologise for the title of this thread, however I am all out of witty thread titles (not that previously they have been especially witty) and quite honestly so much has happened I'm not sure how to summarise that to 60 characters.

South Staffs Showing Show - 23rd April 2017

So I posted a few times here, of the impending days showing I had managed to sign myself up to. The day started well as I got out of the hired lorry at 7am to open the gate to the yard and I heard the air making a swift exit from a rear tyre... Thanks to the efforts of the breakdown service we were on our way by just after 9, so it could have been worse and I was silently releaved to have missed Best Turned Out despite having spent an hour sewing plaits the evening before.

It was all rather stressful after arriving, as my yard mate and his stable mate headed to the ring for their class immediately after arriving and I had to leave a very hot King with my none horsey OH whilst I tried desperately to dress myself in the pitch black in the back of a 3.5tonne horsebox. Having driven everyone mad with my constant screams of "is everything okay!?" from the lorry we were finally ready to go...

We promptly spent nearly an hour walking around the car park waiting for our first class, which I hadn't even wanted to do but felt I should as we had arrived so early. We finally headed in for 'Senior Best Rider'... yes I know... promptly lost the ability to canter on the right leg and nearly disappeared out of the arena a few times. I was pleasantly surprised with fourth place and a "very effectively ridden" from the judge.

We then had abit of a wait before entering the Sports Horse class followed immediately by the Ridden Hunter class. So the Sports Horse class consisted mostly of King and I arguing about whether he might like to stand still, deafening the entire show ground with his calls to his stable mate who was back at the lorry, and trying not to get run away with in the canter. However the judge was very kind to us and actually placed us third, and commented that had he stood still he would have been placed much higher.

So having had a stearn talking to, we re entered the ring for the ridden hunter class. Where he managed to both stand still and not deafen anyone... He did a lovely show and only went and won!

The point at which she said to me, "his manners are impeccable and of all the horses here I would love to spend a days hunting on him" I thought best not to mention the fact that the only time he went hunting he lost his marbels flipped over backwards and I walked for half an hour to collect him from a farmers field that he had jumped in to...

Swalcliffe UA One Day Event - Monday 1st May

We then the following week headed off for our second event of the season at Swalcliffe. I felt just as unprepared for this as I had done Calmsden as I had once again volunteered the day before and riding, plaiting and collecting the lorry was a mad rush... but where's the fun in having a quiet life?

It was an early start to say the least and we drove into Swalcliffe at 7am alongside 4 other early birds... and this is (believe it or not) where it went wrong... yes as in it went wrong as soon as we arrived... I said as we drove in "I'm not sure I should park here, it's too open, he doesn't like being stood in big open spaces" and promptly parked there anyway.

King is a complex creature, the sort of horse that is un phased by things you would assume to be fear inducing, yet being able to see two horses behind a hedge in the distance PETRIFYING!! Like not just a little bit, as in shaking and loosing the plot scary... it's not our day I thought as I chased him round the car park trying desperately to get his bridle on... why did I not trust my instinct and park somewhere boxed in... can I justify £60 entry + lorry hire just to arrive at the venue then turn around and go home??

Anyway, some how I managed to keep hold of him, tack up without getting flattened and launched myself on board with a brief "I'll have to meet you up there" to the OH as we disappeared toward the Dressage warm up...

Could this be the day I eat dust in the dressage was my first thought, is he going to loose the ability to canter on the right rein again (default Kings stressed move)... I am please to report that I didn't eat dust, and we cantered on the right leg... A deserved albeit disappointing and frustrating 38 dressage.

So I decided it may be a good idea to now listen to earlier instincts and move the lorry and I'm pleased to report this worked and he stood tied up munching his hay net before we headed to show jumping. I had said this morning whilst walking the ice rink of a SJ course (hard ground and rain overnight meant it was pretty lethal first thing) that if I felt he wasn't enjoying it or he was struggling I would retire... and I would have no problem doing so - he is too precious!

I walked to the SJ warm up and imagined the impending doom, and in doing so reached for my neck strap (anyone who knows me will know this is my security blanket, my safety net, my one and only)... it wasn't there!!!! Disaster number 3 of the day great. In actual fact he warmed up super, we then stood around watching a few then went to jump another cross pole, which I promptly buried him in to and we ground to a halt... disaster number 4, stress King made a reappearance... thankfully we managed to claw it back and have a few nice fences in the warm up. We headed in and over the first, he was pretty game but my worrying about him slipping just shut him down a little over the fences so we had a couple of poles but he was awesome and I no longer had any worries about the ground, and it only confirmed what I already knew... he likes the firm ground!

Onto the XC... for the first time in our short competition career he got seriously gee'd up in the start box, I think he's suddenly twigged what it means... I can't speak highly enough of him, this was the first time he hasn't felt sticky over the first, he just took me round. Only sticky moment being a HUGE leap over a ditch meaning we nearly disappeared passed fence 10, but he just locked on and jumped it for me. I however need to let the handbrake off again!

We finished up 15th in our section, which is not too bad all things considered!

The Following Thursday

Was a very big day... not only did my OH surprise me with the purchase of a horsebox, he also got down on one knee... and I said yes... it was a big surprise but we are both over the moon. As are the rest of the 'family'...

Moreton Morrell BRC ODE

So, this was the day I have been waiting for, I got to drive myself to an event in my own little lorry... no collecting the lorry the night before and dropping it home afterwards. BLISS!

We arrived and King was half asleep, a mix of sunshine, a belly full of grass and obviously a smooth ride in CeeCee!

He pulled it out the bag for the dressage, I am SO proud of him. He did a 34.8 in a harshly marked section to be in the top half after dressage... breakthrough much, hallelujah!

On to the Show Jumping, a relatively relaxed warm up, and we headed to conquer our Moreton Morrell Show Jumping demons - we have always had issues here... a stop at the first fence here last year folowed by elimination in the BRC Show Jumping last October... I am not sure what it is about the place but he really struggles with fences pointing in a certain direction. I can only assume this is because of what he can see beyond the fence, its tough when you're easily distracted.

Anyway we made it all the way to fence 5, and I tell you what he felt so rideable and was jumping out of his skin... then we promptly ground to a halt before the 6th fence. I have watched the video over and over and I am convinced he is looking at something in the distance again, as he just sort of stumbles back to trot and we can't get going again before the fence.

Anyway he went on to jump a beautiful rest of the round and we went away with 19 faults, thanks to the time! Grrr....

So of course having gotten THE phase out of the way (anyone who has followed my posts will be aware of our inability to achieve 3 average phases in a day and out maximum is two) we were now on for a super clear XC...

Which is exactly what we had, he was an absolute legend, he couldn't have made it feel any easier he was genuinely the best I have known him. He is growing in confidence as am I and this season I am being careful not to break that again...

They are some fab outings and you've also learnt a few things which is brilliant.

The picture coming out the water is my favourite!

Thank you Jenni, the transport hasn't quite sunk in yet, can't quite believe how lucky I have gotten!

Congratulations on so many fronts!

King looks great - his canter is certainly uphill in the xc photos isn't it? :D

Thank you so much. Yes you can't say he isn't up hill! I always joke that it is good going if you come off the front end as there's always something there!

Ha I love how you have gone from planning a quiet summer to very much not! He sounds like a keeper ;)

I know, bit of a change isn't it! He is definitely a keeper, well beyond the horse box too.

I can't see any pictures on my work PC, but congratulations on your engagement!!

Sounds as though King is going great, good luck for your next plans!

Haha. I turned up at the yard and they all said to me I bet you haven't started planning a wedding but know where you're going in the horsebox first!

Congratulations :):)

Really enjoyed the report as always and super pictures :)

Thanks very much :D I am very lucky to have many friends with fancy cameras!

Congratulations on your engagement and your lovely new wheels. ....

Bloody well done on actually completing all sections!
You must be so chuffed with that, obviously as well as getting a box and a sparkly ring :D

Great report and many congratulations on your engagement.

Thank you very much!

Looks fab! Congrats on the engagement :)

Thank you, very excited :D

It is VERY HHO that we have horsebox not ring pics :D

What a fab report!! Congratulations!!

Thanks so much :D

WOW! Congratulations! Such a lovely post, you and King look awesome and massive congratulations on the engagement. Any chap who proposes via ther gift of a horsebox is a keeper! xx

he is looking super, onward and upwards to the next event

Thank you Monte! Onward and upward indeed, only a few weeks until our 3 day event... SO excited!

Oh wow what a fab report. Aren't you doing well!! It's not unusual to have a bogey phase, I'm sure it will get better the more you do it.

Many congrats on the lorry (and the engagement, I guess lol), now THAT is how to propose to an equestrian! Might send this to my OH, make him take notes :D

Looking forward to the next report :)

What an update! Huge congratulations on your engagement, and what a way to announce it (I prefer the idea of a horse lorry to a diamond ring ;) ). It sounds like you and King are going great guns too, well done!!

Well done, the horse looks smashing - especially x country.

And that has to be the right lad for you - proposing with a horse box, about as romantic as you could get

Wow congratulations on so many fronts! I have always enjoyed your posts but so much good news this time.

Congratulations on your engagement and on the lorry!!!! You both look great together, good luck at the 3 day.
