I have been to look at project pony today and really liked him but I am a bit stuc for a price for him - they have told me what they would like and for me it is a bit higher than I was looking to pay so I am going to go back to them with my offer and see what they say but just wanted to check I am not wildily off

Horse in question is 16hh ,just turned 4 ,out of racing as not quick enough ,clean legs but not alot of heart room so quite close in front, well put together and compact ,has just been gelded - still on rest for another two weeks ,hack type build(think he might be too big to shown as a hack) ,no vices, good to box, shoe, clip etc but has done no retraining as such so not sure about roads, shows, hacking alone etc Any ideas??

I'd have a guess at £500 but could be way out.

There are so many horses just out of racing that IMO they are not really worth much until they have been proven as a riding horse.

£500 tops, those sort are ten a penny. I know a fair few people on here have paid a lot more but really if you look around, the sort you are after are usually available for free or upto £500 (£800 if you go to Ascot or the like).

I was going to go for £750 - they had him up at £1500 but dropped to £1000 (unofficially - my friend is the secretary at the yard so got the goss for me

) He isn't my normal sort but I really liked his attitude to life . Also Im thinking that he is probably costing them £100-£150 a week in stabling so they would want to see him gone soooner rather than later

£1k/£1.5k... but then mine went for £3k when he came out of racing and I paid £2.5k for him shortly after. He had pretty decent breeding which some people may say is irrelevant but a quailty horse is still a quailty horse. It's a bargin compared to the average young competition horse!

I think the minimum bid at Ascot bloodstock sales is £400 which gives you an idea of what ex-racers go for!

Yes you can get them dead cheap or free from the sales, but its abit questionable what you are buying.

I'd say 750 - 1k is the right price, if hes got clean legs, not done much racing, no vices and is a nice enough sort.

Looking through some of the adverts I am AMAZED what people want for their ex racers. I know of someone who had an ex racer who had done a little bit of this and that who was thinking of asking £6000!!! Likewise, a racer pretty much straight of the track was advertised in h&h for £4000 a couple of weeks ago (there was thread about it). My ex racer was £800 as a 6 year old who had been off the track for a year and I also loaned her for a year first. I rekon ur about right with an offer of £750...maybe go a bit higher if you know the horse and a bit about his attitude e.t.c. Good luck :-)

The ex racer I have ran his last race in Nov 05, the person I got him off purchased him shortly after Nov 05 for nothing, they had him 3 years before he was given to me for nothing, his legs are fine, in fact nothing was wrong with him until a few weeks ago when he put his back out but think that was due to him being out in the snow

This is my problem - I (or rather my dad) went a bit overboard on my first exracer. He was up for £5k but my dad took him as part of his bonus. He had done some retraining and been bsja-ing with some winnings but he was ridiculously over priced for what he was . Think my dad felt sorry for me as my other two neddies were going horrendously wrong at the time so just normal ex racers prices are a bit beyond me

if you really really like him go there in person and put 500 cash on the table and go from there! ex racers are 10 a penny and if a gelding his breeding is worth sweet FA! as you say this is a horse which is taking up a box worthy of 150 to 200 per week in training fees. i tjink you have the upper hand in bargaining, and stick to your guns and walk away . they will run after your money in 24 hours! good luck and enjoy!
