Well on the 7th of April me and Tess are going out to our first proper outing in the box nothing big but a pleasure ride in Peterborough. We are going with a good friend of mine and her cob as well, he is only 4 and it will be his first trip out so should be exciting !

However Tess can be a pain in the bum out hacking if a strange horse approaches her at speed so it could be interesting :D the starting time limit is 12pm so me and friend have decided to set off at 11:30 in the hope we will be towards the back and wont cause any of the speed demons any issues. I know Tess will settle after a few people have over taken but im a bit worried what i should do if she does start to jog on the side and become nervous i don't want any falls on our first day out.

We were just going to go for a relaxed day , pop the odd jump here and there and hopefully have a nice calm canter with little Cyril :) Any tips will be welcomed regarding keeping myself and Tess calm if she starts to panic during the first few riders over taking us i certainly do not want to ruin it for anyone else having to deal with a tap dancing cob. Also the dress code is smartly turned out for both horse and rider so we were going to wiz all the feathers off and have a nice tidy clip seeing as she looks like a fluff ball at the moment but what should i wear ?

Thank you lovely people :D

I doubt anyone will overtake you at speed at the end of a fun ride - particularly if you ask them to walk and pull over so they can get by. There isn't normally much of a dress code either (not that I've done a fun ride in years!) so I wouldn't worry too much.. Just go and enjoy :)

I wouldn't want to cause hassle to anyone else by walking by us , i worry it would be rude to ask :o thank you, put my mind to rest a fair bit :) will be nice, fingers crossed the weather picks up !

I thought you had decided to grow her feet out? Clean jods and boots and a nice gilet or jacket will be perfect.

We did, i was slightly worried the leg warmer look wouldn't go down to well but by the sounds of things it is slightly more relaxed than i first thought so maybe not :) Thank you, didn't want to be under or over dressed.

Which ride is it? Been looking at ones around P'Boro :) I promise I won't thunder past on my fatty cow cob ;)

Better to ask than risk her getting upset - and a polite request is never (/very rarely) rude. Lots of fun rides have rules about passing at an appropriate speed anyway. Personally I refuse to pass in walk unless the overtakee stops (as my little legged pony physically can't overtake!) but if they want to stop and let me walk past, it's no problem :) Otherwise we have to overtake in collected trot!

I've never heard of a turn out or dress code at a fun ride.

flicking through past photos now and dont think there is one :)

It is the Fitzwilliam pleasure ride on the 7th of April :) Looks like nice route over 10 miles, hey i have one of those but we don't do much thundering :D

I hate that , we would defo stop to allow people past like i say would hate for us to hold others back :o

In my experience, most folk at fun rides are going pretty slow anyway ;) I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just enjoy!

*well, except places like Halton and the Newmarket ride that it. Speaking of which, must badger some folk into Newmarketing it up this year  *

Thank you, Im sure we will just worrying about everything as usual

Pop a green ribbon on his tail, pop a few drops of rescue remedy on your tongue and enjoy it. If he jogs sideways or gets excited, just remember that it is natural for him to do this at this age so chill...sit quiet and ignore it. The more he realises you aren't getting worked up, the more quickly he will calm down.

Why not also do a few trial trips out in the box and perhaps take him to a local riding club or something as preparation.

Good luck and have fun x

You can get it at pharmacies or health food shops. I have never used it but my friends daughter can't compete or hunt without it.

I am sure it is a green ribbon to say that your horse is green, but I have never used ribbons for these reasons, so someone who knows has my permission to point and laugh at me if I am wrong ;)

No, no im sure you are right with green, my mum knows but she is asleep right now and dont think she will appreciate me waking her up to ask about ribbons :D

Please do it and share the video :D

I have heard of G.A.D. Have you tried valerian? Again you can buy it as a dried herb at health food shops. It is food stuff...banned for use with horses in affiliated competition by the FEI, but it does work. Is great to make a herbal tea out of, either a strong tea for immediate help or weak and daily for a cumulative effect. Talk to the people at your health food shop.

I am not really into herbal remedies, but vervain and valerian helped my ex racer enormously. She was on them for three months and they did what no equine callers on the market managed. She is off the, now, but during that three months, she learned how to cope with stuff :-)

You will be fine. Just relax and enjoy.

Clean jodhs, boots and tidy coat should be fine, but if you are really unsure a call to the Secretary should clear that up for you. =)

Ribbons - green for novice, red for kicker.

Also a splayed hand held behind your back as horses approach behind will ask/alert people to slow down/give you space.

Enjoy yourself. :D
