I've just been reading another thread about sales and just wondered what people thought of Exeter. Its the only horse sales I've been to and not sure how it compares to others. There are sometimes some very nice animals there. I could never myself send a horse to the sales but most seem to just accept it (don't know if that makes it more sad). What are your experiences there? Thanks

Fairly good, mostly have good horses but do tend a lot of the hill ponies that people have taken on and can't manage too, so this does attact the meat men.
One or two with bad feet/poor weight in most sales. And a few head cases too. But have seen a few gems go though too.

Not the worst sale by far

Interested to know what types of horses (in what condition) you can pick up and for what money?

Never been to a sales, hoping to go soon but wanted some sort of in sight before hand. Thanks op for post as think it could be quite informative:)

We have a few from Exeter, good experiences and one bad. We have bought,

5yr old sec A, nice little pony, showring condition. paid £450. Broken done pc camp etc. which we then sold on as too sharp for my 9 yr old daughter.
14hh 11 yr old connemara mare. Very pretty and loving!! (become my favourite). Bidding was quite fierce for her and she was the top selling pony of the day, I paid £850 for her. She was unwarrented and was unsound the day after we got her home, sound at the sale so I think she had had loads of painkillers. After a visit to Tex gamble she was then sound. She is amazing SJ and I imagine a fab hunting pony. She has xcountry schooled , loving it! However if the ground is very hard she will be slightly lame the next day , so we are careful with her.
Another 5 yr old little grey pony, paying about £400. She had been with quite a rough dealer and had a lot of confidence issues. However 9 yr old daughter fell in love with her and after time she is now a very happy little pony who flies around sj courses with 12 yr old daughter.
14hh bay gelding warrented, very bad experience paid £750, pony not as described and dangerous. Was returned under warrentee but lost money due to auctioneers costs.......
so Beware .... Exeter sales warennty will not get you your money back if things are not as described or horse lame!
Generally TB's struggle to make more than about £450, small ponies about the same (some can be as little as £200. Cobs make the most and an average coloured cob will make about £1400.
Good luck, we have enjoyed are buying time down there, most horses are in ok condition, nothing dreadful.

this lad came from one of the not so fab dealers, 15.2 bay gelding around 4 yr.

this youngster has attittide but not in a nasty way, on the roads hes more like a 20 year school master, can stick a 10 year old kid on him to go for a ride .. alone or in company!
i paid 650

Juliag- are you able to walk around to look at them before auction begins? See them trotted up? How do you judge the goods from the dodgy ones?

Im going with someone who quite often buys from there, i'll be going a few times before I want to buy just to get used to looking at them from a buyers pov, so I get used to picking the goodens.. Thankfully will have my friend watching over me and my hands tied behind my back!

Iv brought 2 from exeter and both are fab horses, private seller who I had a lovely chat to before bidding started and both where truthfull to what the horses were like. 16hh tb 5 yr old £400 saint to ride and a 14.2 mare again a real poppet £200

Thank you jhoward that's good to know, there is only one particular delear I wish to avoid.

Your chap is lovely, thank god he went to you:-)

Thank you, unfotunatly i really dislike him lol. he has such a piggy attitude, somebody came to try him in the school and he was like thanks but no, he walked through a barrel, stuck both front legs in a tyre jump, knocked over a jump wing, then stood in it, then for the party piece he tried to climb over the school fence, luckily viewer thought it was hysteriacal.
he has much character!
I tried to sell him, the sod went lame and gave himself colic, cue an 800 quid vets bill.

buck/rear/spook he doesnt. hes been ridden down a main road met everything, hes been walked past a lorry actully tarmacing..

im very thank full the cretin has now gone on loan lol!

Aw dear, he does sound like a character, thinks he's the boy eh!

I found with my girl that she was super safe in traffic - I wander If it's down to them being at a dealers and hacked out on the road ALOT (or so I assume.)

Spotty, there are actually a couple, although I can't remember the other names, they sometimes swap the horses between themselves and sell them under other people... can't remember the names but one of them is a woman, someone on here will probably know the name and send it too you, she sometimes sells a fair ropey few 'ex hunters'

Thank you queenbee, hmm seems I shall really have to be on my guard. When buying a 3/4 year old, are they usually the age they are said to be? This is my biggest worry..

Could someone possibly PM me the dealers names to avoid? I've got a pretty good idea from watching but its always nice to know!!

The tack side of the sale can be good too if you search through but make sure you know what things are worth as people can be stupid - last sale I saw some used childrens jodphur boots going for £5 more than in the shops! Plus they had buyers premium on top!!

There are more arabs for sale tommorrow from the stud reduction. Stallion and two broodmares. Interesting to see what they make. They had the youngsters there last month - don't know much about arabs but they seemed nice and only went for £500. I couldn't work out why something so specialist was being sold through a horse sale

I saw the Arabs too, they look nice, shame the sale is so far away from me.
Can't believe the ones last month went so cheap, just goes to show the current climate I guess.

Nagling - have pm'd you!

Would you pm me with results of tomorrows sale - If you go, mainly on the 3/4 year olds unbroken - just want to know what they are going for, height doesn't matter to much, pref over 14hands! Would really appreciate it, or if anyone could give me a rough idea from previous sales.

:)

SpottyTB would you mind terribly sending me the list of dodgy dealers too, as we will probably go to. Thanks so much.

Thanks! Will message you tomorrow night with results!

As Im known for wanting to give my animals "unusual" names (dont know why people think they are unusual - I think they are perfectly acceptible!!) Im biting back the urge to pull a sickie tomorrow and go buy Cauliflower.....

Cluny - just pm'd you regarding the one I avoid at all costs.

Nagling - thanks so much, would have loved to go but can't get transport from Cornwall this time!

Racergirl- please go! I want to see pictures of cauliflower ;) lovely lovely name!!! :P

The arab stallion was literally to die for! Stunning horse and temperment and he only went for £1600. I think he would have made thousands more sold privatly. If only I had more land!!

I think that was probably the top price. I've not seen such bad prices there before. Lots didn't sell.

I was seriously tempted by a sweet little welsh part bred (reg) who was in foal to keep my pregnant mare company when the foals start to need company. Don't really want to buy before winter but really should have done as she only made £50!!

:( that is exactly why I don't go. I once went to Sedgemoor sales and thought it was so scary - the chap gabbling away I couldn't understand what he was saying half the time and the noise level - my ears were ringing let alone the poor horses.

If I could I bring them all home! £50 for an in foal mare :( poor girl hope she found a lovely home.

:D Having contemplated pulling a sickie, the irony of waking up with the cold from hell wasnt lost on me ;)

he was lot 90 - anyone know how he did??? and the 18hh tb that was sold after him??

Thanks for letting me know, seriously cheap prices. I saw the stallion advertised privately a couple of months ago, i think he was up for about £7k. Someone got a good bargain.

Goodness thats not the way to advertise is it?!! Not seen those before he looked really nice in the flesh. I saw a photo of him on her website and didn't like the look of him at all until I actually saw him!

I thought it was odd to put something specialist like that in a sale although I would have thought selling him through the breed society would have been best. The owner didn't look well though
