Putting together a spreadsheet with all costs for buying, re-training and selling on an exracer. Have a few Qs though :s

1. Roughly what size rug would be needed for a 16hh+ thoroughbred?

2. What is the best brand of rug for a thoroughbred?

3. If hoss is straight off the track, "it" will be living out over winter. Knowing the British climate, what would be the best weight rugs to go for?

4. Who would you recommend insuring with and how much?

I think that is all... Thank you in advance for help

1. I would say 6'3" or 6'6"

2. Depends on the individual horse, Rambo's fit my TB best but may not suit all.

3. Again depends on the horse, you need to take into account the condition of the horse, weather or not it is clipped, what part of the country you are in and weather the field has natural shelter.

4. Personal Preference, I use E&L but there may be better out there. Everyone will have good and bad stories about all the different company's so it is which ever one offers you the best policy at the best price.

My boys stable buddy is an ex-racer TB. He takes 6'3 rugs. His owners (like me) can't afford expensive rugs so he has an old weatherbeeter (donated), an Axiom full neck HW turnout (off ebay - we bought the same) and a standard LW turnout. In winter they just layer with fleeces if needed. He isn't clipped.

He's lovely!!!

1. 6ft - 6ft3
2.Weatherbeta or Horseware
3.Heavy Weight
4. To keep premiums down I always ensure for a low value but make sure I'm insured for vet fees -A horse off the track wouldnt have a market value more than £1,500 imo

My ex racer is 16.2 and in a 6ft6
Weatherbeta, horseware and tesco rugs fit him the best. Tesco rug lasted the longest too!
Heavy weight
and insurance is whoever gives you the best policy, so will change from time to time. I'm currently with Petplan.

Re. rugs - just be a little careful. Don't go for a combo rug where the neck is not detachable as the TBs often have high withers and both of mine had absolutely awful rubs from the combos. They were fine with detachable neck rugs - I have Weatherbeeta ones.

Thank you all so much

6ft3 cropped up most, so I'll use that in the spreadsheet.

Looking for the cheapest out of those on Equestrian Clearance

Will look at light weight and heavy weight, then. I can stick something under a light weight if it's too warm for heavy, and too cold for light.

Poking around those for quotes now. The Three are with NFU, so will probably end up with them.

Thank you!!

I have my 16'1 ex racer in a 6ft3 rug. All of mine are Fal rugs and I buy them second hand off ebay. saves me a fortune and they last for ever. Have tried Weather beeta and they all rub and the Rambo rugs come up far too narrow across the shoulders with the diagonal chest fastening.

I have light, medium and heavyweight - all with necks as mine is a total hippo. I have never had a problem with them rubbing but he doesn't have high withers. as has muscled up and got fantastic topline.

Would only ever insure with NFU as have tried others and been totally unimpressed!

1. Roughly what size rug would be needed for a 16hh+ thoroughbred?
Most of ours that sixe would be 6ft - 6ft3.

2. What is the best brand of rug for a thoroughbred?
Masta for lighter types, Weatherbeeta for deep girthed ones.

3. If hoss is straight off the track, "it" will be living out over winter. Knowing the British climate, what would be the best weight rugs to go for?
All our throughbreds wear a lightweight turnout in the winter, anything thats clipped gets a Medium weight.

4. Who would you recommend insuring with and how much?
Don't know much about insurance, but vets fees is the main issue.
