This evening I got a call from a neighbour, saying a foal was up the mountain, wandering around by the road. I went to meet him at the spot,he had been feeding it for a couple of days. She is only about six/seven months, hugely underweight, quite weak, has a cough and a very damaged eye (I suspect that she will probably lose it.) Another neighbour brought the box over and we managed to get her loaded and a headcollar on, (she's very head shy...eye injury?). We now have her installed in the yard with my three, which is dodgy because of the cough, but what can you do!? I certainly cannot afford to take on a foal and have contacted a local horse rescue. I knew things were bad, (I live in Southern Ireland) but I thought that was mostly in the thuoroughbred side of things. This foal is going to grow into a nice heavy type, hairy legs, good natured etc. I wish I could keep her, but I'm being sensible. It makes me sick that someone couldn't be arsed to do the right thing!
Sorry for the rant!

I always wonder my self why they cant be bothered to find a home, sell it, or call a rescue centre, it does'nt take much effort, I dont know what goes through these people's heads, why have a horse or any other animal if your not an animal lover!

She's a bay, no way she was lost, no travellers staying anywhere near, and miles from anywhere. I too hope the rescue can help! They're probably pretty full!

My gelding came from somewhere in S Ireland (area escapes me) but were aware that he was beated quite badly as a colt - he also has the white scars to prove it unfortunately

Hes very suppressed now, and will only have a fun time if we say he can, otherwise he wouldnt dare... its quite horrible really.

cheers! everyone, I don't get time to come on here much, but I was just so frustrated at the situation! There's always an eejit like me to pick up the pieces of other people's poo!

thanks laniep, I've P.M'd you. going off to check on them all now, will keep everyone informed and hopfully get some pictures tommorrow. cheers all!

Vickyguns and laniep I think you are both fabulous. Rescued neds can be truly rewarding and often go on to great things. Here's hoping your little waif has a long and happy life. Even if she loses her eye, she can still be a happy, safe riding horse. Can't wait to hear how things turn out xxx

Thats tragic, that somone has not even bothered to look for the foal!!! At least she may have a chance because of yr good will (Yr good not to keep her, I think I would get too attached).
Good luck with her and let all know how it turns out!

If it was a coloured foal it probably wouldn't have been dumped! I have overheard a conversation between two 'men' with in foal coloured mares where one said if its a bay colt I'm shooting it, and the other said I'd just push mine into the dyke. They just do not want solid colours, they have no sale value. Could have been 'big man' talk but I think not knowing what I know about them. There was a bay colt foal just left in a trailer recently (on HH). Why don't they just shoot them if they don't want/value them? Or dump them and call somebody. Completely heartless.
