as above really...does falling off frighten you? i'm starting to think that i'm a little strange. falling off doesn't bother me in the slightest, now have always had slightly quirky horses so have sort of got used to being chucked off and now i just pick myself up and get back on

my 4 year old has had me off many times (courtesy of his rodeo bull technique

) but i've just got used to it...have had three trainers refuse to get on him but yet he doesn't frighten me in the slightest...whats wrong with me?!!

Do you fall of all the time? I think if you do then that is why it doesn't bother you. You expect to fall of so it doesn't come as a shock to you.

I don't fall off very often (have fallen off Charlie 4 times in 7 years) so when I do or when I nearly do it does shake me up a bit as I am not expecting it. Does that make sense?

You do realise I will now fall off tomorrow

I've come off 5 times in the 7 months i've had my boy, and it does bother me purely because i feel it's a set back not because i'm scared.

Very true. I think I've only come off about 4/5 times in the last 10 years

But when I was a teenager with my 14.2 is was not uncommon

Not that I don't manage to get seriously injured in other ways

It never used to, but now I've got a screwed neck, I'm not so sure...

you see i'm totally screwed! i have curvature of my spine and three rotated vertebrae that have started to calcify (ie arthritis)- all caused from the continued impact of hitting the deck...but it still doesn't bother me

Well, I wish I was like you! Do you think you could bottle it up and send it my way.. lol

what? my stupidity?!
grin.gif

i think it must be because it happens a lot! i had a lesson a couple of months ago with a new trainer and fell off literally 3x in 10 minutes. i don't have a crap seat, the horse is just too athletic, so i kept getting back on- i think the trainer was in shock by the end

Ah, see I've had osteoarthritis since I was 17/18, and I think that was when I started to be aware what constant pain, as opposed to an injury was.
crazy.gif
Before that I was stupidly happy to get on anything and everything - and was frequently asked to

Now, after being double barreled in the face and all the limitations that I've had as a result, I am not at all scared about riding my own, but I wouldn't want a silly horse or ever risk getting injured by someone elses.

It does now..... never used to but I lost my ability to bounce at about 19 when I had a very heavy fall jumping at a uni comp...

When I was younger I rode at a less than reputable establishment and was chucked on all sorts and developed a velco bum but even if they did get me off I always used to leap back on and think "owww" a few hrs later! Now falling hurts there and then.... shame.. lol

No, but then being young I bounce well
smirk.gif
But I am used to it, fell off little 11.2 welsh mountain pony over 50 times, yes I counted
shocked.gif
However only fallen off my mare once in 3 years and fallen off the big boy once and believe me that's the last time I wish to fall off him!

So in answer to OP it doesn't bother me unless I am on a horse above 16.3hh
grin.gif
SOrry for rambling on
wink.gif

I'm scared of injury (or death
wink.gif
) I don't mind falling off as long as it doesn't really hurt. It actually improves my confidence and gives me a kick up the backside to ride better if I just fall off. When I've been thrown and got hurt, then yes, it bothers me.

It dosen't bother me but I've deff got more brains now! If something is worried, sharp or tense i'll now tend to do a bit more ground work with it before riding and settle it, rather than in my more gung ho days of leaping on anything and everything. TBH I ride a lot of young newly backed horses most of which i've never met before, and confidence has a lot to do with how many times you hit the deck. There are no bad young horses, only uneducated ones, and those that are likely to dump you can normally be sorted first with some work on the floor. I'm a firm believer that no youngster should bronc or misbehave when being backed if the work has been done at their own pace and the horse is fully accepting (bar the odd little buck to balance themselves) I fall frequently out hunting though! lol, but its normally a result of the horse falling!

Never used to, but it does now! Too old to bounce! Combined with having a really bad riding accident several years ago which could've left me paralysed, I now only ride "safe" horses - well as safe as horses can ever be!?

It really bugs me but it's (as far as I am concerned) better to be safe than sorry. Boring I know, but there you go......................!
ooo.gif

hell its not boring doris...its sensible! i may be totally fearless when it comes to falling off...but ask me to ride down a road of any description and i sh!t myself every time a car comes past! all because i got run over a few years back...wierd huh!

Thanks for that diggerbez - I am relieved that I am not a total wimp!

Poor you and your horrible accident - at least mine was in my manege!! I remember whilst in mid-air, thinking "I hope I don't hurt myself when I hit the ground!"........hey ho.

Thanks again because I thought I really was being really boring!

I suppose because you never get much warning that something's going to happen that will make you fall off as it's always quite quick that it does happen it's not something I spend my time thinking might happen each time I ride. I've come off my boy about 5 times in the 5 years I've had him and fortunately no injury so I've been very lucky as I'm sure if you have a nasty injury from a fall or a very hairy coming off experience it would be something hard to shake off and effect your confidence. As I'm worried about being injured and unable to work from a fall I always wear my body protector and I'm not a speed demon so I guess I limit the chance of it happening though I do jump!

bizarrely enough it used to before i had the most recent fall which is the one thats done the most damage....now i just want to get on again and crack on with my riding and Ted's training which is a feeling ive not had after falling off since i was about 10 tbh how odd :S it only just occured to me as well as id never thought about it before

When I was in my late 20s/early 30s I had a mad TBx who threw me off several times but I never worried about falling off her and the worst injury I ever had was a torn muscle in my back. I was more worried about riding her on the road because I couldn't guarantee that she wouldn't have us undera car. Since then I've not really fallen off and would definitely not like to. I broke my ankle a couple of years ago in an accident on the ground and that made me realise that I am not indestructible. I do think that as we get older we get more cautious, well I certainly have (I am now in my 50s), so maybe you are just too young to be frightened.

Not really. not read the whole thread.

I've had a lot of falls. Nothing mega big but broken collar bone, broken arm and a couple of concussions. Plus a few sore arses!!

I don't really think about it.

ah now if you rode my horse that wouldn't have happened...he's so quick that there is usually NO thinking time whatsoever...before you know whats happened you are quite safely sat in the sand!! hee hee

no i don't get frightened fall off... yet!

i think if yuo ride youngsters a lot you have to expect to come off.

i may change my mind if i come off and get seriously injured though

What worries me about falling off is not me, its what happens to my horse on a hack if I am lying on the deck.

Its not the falling which is the problem, its the landing afterwards.

The trainers wont want to ride a horse which has problems with riders staying on because if they dont work, they dont get paid.

Yes, falling off does bother me. I live on my own and have bills to pay. Besides, I don't want to end up in a wheelchair.

It depends really! I've had some horrid falls in the past and they used to scare me and I used to hate it! However now I've matured a bit if I fall off I dust myself off and get back on without too much of an issue - unless it hurts!!

I think it depends how often you do it and whether you hurt yourself.

Sometimes if you haven't fallen off in ages the thought of it starts to terrify you and inhibits your riding, same if you have a couple of nasty falls, but then a couple of falls where you just have a couple of bruises and it kind of reminds you that it isn't as awful as you think and you can get on with it again.

I used to fall off loads riding a pony that bucked and it never bothered me, but then I had many years of not falling followed by a couple of crashing falls and it knocked my confidence. I got to thinking that falling off was really bad.

A couple of falls where I was bucked off and able to get straight back on and another where I was "jumped off" and didn't hurt myself got things in perspective again.
