Farrier prices !!!

Isle of Wight!
£60 full set, £35 fronts with hinds trimmed and £20 for an all round trim. My farrier is brilliant, will come out asap to remove shoes if needed (friend uses same farrier, her horse has 'issues') with no charge, is very organised (therefore, rarely late, but, if something goes wrong earlier in the day, he'll text), regularly competes in farriery competitions (won the hunter shoeing at Surrey last year), trains apprentices and organises mainland farriers to come over to do workshops with the other Island farriers.
For such a small area, we have a large number of farriers (I can think of 8 off the top of my head!) and a barefoot trimmer has just started (£10 a trim). 5 different farriers come to our yard, cheapest is £47 a set. Mine is the most expensive but is well worth it, comes every 8 weeks, great with the horses and never had a lost shoe in the past 6 years!
Downside is, never gossips (so have to get the latest stories off the other farriers!)
 
Cost is also down to competition IMO - I pay £65 now, but was paying nearly £80 in Hampshire and Oxfordshire when I was in those areas nearly 5 years ago. Here in Newmarket I am using a farrier who is widely considered to be one of the best in the country, but prices are more reasonable as there are so many farriers here thanks to the racing industry! I could get T done for as cheap at £50 a set but would rather pay a bit more for a decent job. When I was in Oxfordshire I had some awful farriers, one of whom crippled my old boy with NB that he did not need.
 
We pay £40 something for two fronts depending on whether they're refits or new shoes. It's not cheap, considering our old farrier charged £50 something for a full set of new shoes. But then, he also trashed her feet and is the reason she still needs remedial work soooooo......
 
seems to me that farrier prices fluculate like hay and not knowing actual prices of equipment shoes nails, ga,s rasps etc more profit than hay.

refits are £5 less...

Lasts me 12 weeks :o)

I pay £60 for a full set and with the new farrier my TB has gone from 5 week shoeing with cracked/split feet to 8/9 weeks with fab looking feet thanks to him taking the time to try and deal with the issues . He also keeps his sense of humour when dealing with the little TB that I sold last year who turns into the kung fu kid for shoeing - love my farrier to bits and hope he doesn't retire any time soon :D

Grrrr, wish I had a "useful" family member like a farrier, vet, saddler...... but nope, all farmers!!! (least I have got well looked after fields, and a man to do the fencing)!!
As both my po's are youngsters and not in work they just get a trim every 8 weeks @ £25 each

My brother is in his 3rd year at uni studying to be a vet - comes in very useful just now and hopefully in the future too!!
 
just gone up to £70 a set and £25 a trim in Edinburgh, happy to pay it and even encouraged him to put prices up.

wonder if all us Edinburgh/lothian people use the same person lol?
 
I pay £80 for a full set in the midlands. Farrier is fantastic though and he happily recommends taking them off to give feet a break regularly. He's just having fronts now at £40. Trim is £25. Expensive, but I now have a sound horse so priceless in my eyes.
 
New Forest south, full set of Natural Balance shoes £85.
Bare-foot trim £25.
He's a really good farrier, takes time and lots of care, but won't do re-fits. Always on time and reasonably good /easy to get in touch with. His shoes stay on too well (!) which means its easy to let them be on too long, IMO ! Wouldn't change farriers though. When I had my first pony, a set of shoes cost 37/6p. Not going to tell you how long ago that was ! :p
