Farrier told me it is illegal for me to trim/rasp my own horse

I would be interested to know where all of these shoddy horse keepers that are trimming their own horses feet are. Most of them don't bother with feet surely? :p

And I don't appreciate being called an idiot just because you can't read. Nowhere did I say that no one should trim their horses hooves. I said it's not a great idea to say it's dead easy when there are people who won't be able to learn how to do it properly. Trim your horses hooves i dont care. But whether you want to accept it or not some people just couldn't learn how to do it properly. Didn't say it was different to other stupid things either i actually said when you consider what else people do with horses do you really want to trust them to do their hooves? Your choice but I prefer to not watch horses suffer.

I did not call you an idiot .
I said that am not interested from being prevented from trimming my horses feet
because some people are idiots .
I stand by what I said it's very easy to be taught to trim .
All you need is a strongish back ,a rasp , a knowledge of how the horses foot works and of course someone to show you the way .
You say you don't care about my horses that's find they don't need you to care they have me .
But why are my horses different to everybody else's ? You seem to care that their owners don't trim their feet , that's a bit illogical .
If I where authoritarian I would prevent shoes being left on longer than six weeks and require horses to have a shoeing break every year that would save more suffering than preventing owners trimming there horse feet.

Just interested, Why can you rasp on a horse that isn't going to be shod but can't on one that is going to be shod?

I think that's because the trim on a shod foot is much more important as horse won't be able to self trim or rebalance below the shoe as the shoe is preventing wear to the bottom of the foot. Plus it could impact how you set the shoe on the foot.

It would be a welfare issue if an owner could not legally rasp off a chip before it pulled away more of the foot. And it would be impossible to police. The FRC have been trying to get parliament to outlaw it but they won't give them any time.

Spoke to my farrier the other day and they are proposing for this to happen

And have been forever. How would you regulate it. Not a soul could know I do my own unless I tell them!

We can't regulate horses being starved and foals tied to fences with bits in their mouths so I would love to hear how this could be implemented.

This.

They've been asking parliament for time for at least three years now and they won't give it. If they do, hundreds of us who trim our own will protest with our stories of horses we saved after farriers gave up on trying to get them sound.

And then, of course, they would also have to add trimming barefoot horses for hard work, nutrition for feet, foot conditioning for all surfaces, boot selection, etc to their own syllabus, because none of that is there at the moment.

It will never happen, or if it does it will never be enforceable. All people will do is make sure they use a sanding block to finish off anything so there is never a rasp mark showing, and hide their rasps like a gin still in the prohibition :)

It's already illegal to cause harm , if we start banning everything that might harm a horse we will end up unable to keep them .
Banning sensible people from doing stuff is not an answer .

Does anyone know why these subjects aren't in the farrier training syllabus?

Because it's an organisation that exists to protect farriers closed shop not to promote practises that enable horses to work without shoes .
When you find a BF friendly farrier it's because he has an open enquiring mind and has found things out for himself .
My farrier has defiantly done this over the last few years and he was one of the people who showed me how to trim .
I fear the WCF are intend on strangling BF , I don't really hear now but bickering between various different organisations training trimmers was an issue in them speaking with one voice .
