Hi guys,

I posted recently about the big fat cob Im taking on from someone. Everyone was really encouraging so I decided to set up this thread and document his journey and see how much he does change.

I dont know if anyone will even find this remotely interesting and it might die a death quickly especially now we are at the early stages but I was thinking of posting pics and updates whenever we have a major milestone. Realisitically Im hoping I wont have him for more than 3 months, maybe I should just get a blog ;) But Im hoping maybe to get some tips from everyone, this cob thing is new territory for me!!

At the moment he is going through his major makeover and mainly walking up very steep hills with the odd transition to trot to keep him awake. He is going to do a dressage test in 2 weeks, this is more to get him out and see the sights as he has rarely left the yard, than the actual dressage test. Im sure a 4 min dressage test wont kill him even this early!

This is a pic of him last Sat which I posted on the other thread, his first day in a year been ridden

This is him today, I think I can see a slight improvement, can anyone else

Another one that would love to see updates!
I think that he looks a lot tidier in the second picture and as doriangrey said he looks a bit more interested and a little more alert.
Well done for taking on a project and trying to improve this horse!

He was distinctly unimpressed on his first day alright and threw his head all over when I arrived with the bridle! hes perfect now to tack up and hes great to stand. He isnt even tied up in todays pic but if he has a lead rope on he thinks he is! However he does like to snort at everything he hasnt done anything spooky or anything yet but I think hes tempted most the time

I was only allowed take about half the length of his mane off so its still really long which is why I plaited it today couldnt stick looking at it any longer. He is getting shoes on at the start of next week so I can push him a bit more and do longer hacks.

This is us hacking today,(wonky plait) the stables are way down in the valley so we are going up quite high and im not quite at the top here

He doesn't look like a cob to me. Just a scruffy horse with a long mane, tail and no muscle.
I am sure once you have put some work into him, he could well be a lovely horse.
Good luck, will be interesting to see the progress.

YES be great to read about your progress! I agree with Dixie, he doesnt really look that cobby - his legs look quite fine in those pictures. He definitely looks more alert in the second photo and I think his back has come up the tiniest bit behind the saddle. Good boy to hack out like that too :) Good luck!

This

That is a NOT a cob and, could quite easily be a fab looking horse once he's built up some muscle and lost that belly. Will be interesting to see how he looks after some work.

I agree he's not a cob, just a bit scruffy. I also think you have been not very kind about a horse that you have been asked to ride. He could turn into a real Gem and make you eat your words :)

Agree with this, I think once he's lost his belly and if you could pull his mane to a normal length he would look like a very smart horse! More ISH than Cob to me though!

This. Lovely looking horse, would love updates! :)

Agree....i would be interested in the progress in 6-12 months from now. Keep us all updated. More interested in this than another ongoing thread. Good to see your going well, onwards and upwards :-)

Funny note ... In Ireland everything is a cob lol if its not a horse, tiny pony or thoroughbred old dealers call it a cob lol

THIS EXACTLY!! Im in Ireland and if its fat and coloured its a cob!

Maybe when hes not fat il call him a horse :D

I call him P as his name gets starred out as an offensive word !

You could call him Brick - he is brown and white! I think he's a lucky boy.

Please, please update I think this transformation could be quite spectacular :)

He's nice horse? Why are you being so down trodden about him?

And if he's a cob then mine must be an elephant as he has 5x the bone that has.

Not allowed pull his mane anymore than I have or cut his tail:( owner definately thinks he is a cob and wants to sell him as a big hairy one, I have been trying to convince him this is not the right route to go down and im sure il get the message to him eventually!

I love him so far to be fair, but I dont think iv been mean about him so not sure where people are getting the idea from, im only having a bit of a joke as I was in the intial thread! Wont be buying him though as nowhere to keep him, riding him and selling for the owner who is keeping my horse at his for free!

Where are you based?

Oh my he looks much tidier and excited by life. funny looking at hte pics I thought actually when he loses a bit of weight and muscles up he'll look quite smart-and...gasp...non cobby!

He has a lovely honest face, it'll be quite the transformation. Before and after pics will be quite dramatic I think. You can put deCobbing on the CV!

On cobs, did anyone see the weight of the cobs in the RDS? They're massive! Some of them are just obese, wobbling around the ring. Is it an unwritten rule that if you you can feed a small one into cob-dom?

haha gadetra that made me laugh!!!

He can still do the distinctly unimpressed looked as can be seen here after me moving him to about 4 different places in the yard and calling his name about 20 times to make his ear perk up, turns out the best photo I got was the first one :D Bit actually looks a bit high in the pic, better check that tomorrow

Very nice type, the sort that people will bite your hand off to buy.

Unfortnately the horse market in Ireland is very bad so I think we will be lucky to sell him. If I told people the price we are hoping to get for him I think most people would faint, given the prices I see horses going for in the UK!
