To prove a point, mostly to myself, I ( a fairly overweight person) walked 38 miles yesterday. I raised nearly £600 (and counting) for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

I hurt a lot today and feel like I've been kicked in the knees with steel toe caps. But I'm also immensely proud of myself and the team that walked with me. 5 set out, and 4 finished. The weather was attrocious, gale force winds, sharp cold showers and no sunshine at all! The support crew were awesome, providing food, drink and clean dry socks at each stop. Got in last night after being up 36 hours, and walking for 18 of those, & promptly showered and went to sleep.

So yes, you can be fit and fat... just a question of what you're fit for. At the moment for me, that's not a lot of anything!

Wow well done! I couldnt walk that far...i was out of puff walking up a really small hill earlier

I was out of puff for most of our walk... not massively, but when we stopped (every 8 or 9 miles) I noticed that my breathing wasn't as slow as usual.

The 1st stage was the easiest bizarrely, given we were walking up and down hill constantly in the dark just when our bodies were thinking it was bed time. The 2nd stage was the worst, it was flat and boring old railway track and the wind was whistling down and across it. the 3rd stage was the easiest, but it was only 7 miles across a (very dry) peat bog. We sort of bounced across it! The 4th stage was a slog across gently sloping moorland. only boggy in places but very rocky/rough track in places. One of the team dropped out here as her hamstrings had seized totally. The 5th (and as it turned out, final) stage was more rocky, and more up and down. My knee "went" about 2/3 of the way through this stage, as did another of the team's, and the pair of us just abut crawled the last 2 miles to the car, including a very very steep up and down a valley over what was basically a glorified rockfall that someone had called a path.

The sight of the cars at the end was beautiful! I was just about in tears, partly the pain, partly the relief and partly the sheer exhaustion!

seriously though, if I can do it, anyone can with the right training!
