Fat... or pregnant?

Oh my poor beautiful Betty is getting a bit of a bashing! Please remember she is my much loved horse and this thread was just for fun while I wait for results. Her coat is showered in compliments in person, everyone says how shiny and lovely she is, so I am going to put that down to the camera (although I did subject the poor pet to my first amateur attempt at a clip last month so it could also be that). Fairly sure she doesn’t have cushings and the vet said she isn’t actually particularly fat but certainly an odd shape which could be down to having had foals in the past. She is turning towards the camera in every photo, not standing straight. Hopefully get an answer today or tomorrow and if she isn’t pregnant I will get back to trying to get her fit and build up topline.

Sorry OP I'm sure people don't mean to be critical...they were trying to answer the fat / pregnant question.

She is a lovely looking mare and you're asking the right question so you can do the best for. It's much better to ask than to ignore health issues.

noooooooooo...!
should also maybe mention that she doesn’t appear to have had a season since I’ve had her. I was thinking I had gotten lucky and wondering what all the fuss about mares and their seasons was about...

I've had my mare for two years, and I've only noticed one season so you could just be lucky! (And I only noticed that one because she 'winked' while I was brushing her tail. There's never been any change in behaviour.)

Fingers crossed Betty's just got a bit of leftover broodmare belly. She looks like a real sweetheart, and lucky to have an owner who's asking the right questions about her care.

This is what I am needing to hear! Thank you. She is the loveliest wee thing in the world and I am panicking in case that’s down to a secret foal rather than it just being her natural gentle temperament.

Thank you ? I’m feeling a bit bad I have inadvertently opened her up to criticism on the internet. She is my first cob so I am trying to be very aware of her weight and certainly there is no denying that her tummy is large. But it’s actually the lack of fat pads elsewhere that is making everyone at my yard ask the foal question!

You are doing the right thing with asking the odd shape could be due to a few things foal previously foaling more than once and just lack of top which is down to work or lack of it. I hope she has the same lovely temperament even if she does foal. As to seasons my old girl was never noticable in season so much so when she went to stud at 12 noone had a clue when she was likely to be in season

I don't want to jinx anything (and I don't really know what I'm talking about) but I don't really think she looks pregnant at all to be honest. I think she has been enjoying the grass, especially if her teeth weren't great when she arrived and her mouth feels better now. She looks a lovely girl.

Fingers crossed! I’m glad the consensus seems to be no, I’ve really been enjoying getting to know her and being able to join in with group clinics and stuff that I haven’t been able to do for years. I have a beach trip booked in for a fortnight’s time and I will be so gutted if I have to put all our plans on hold, however sweet a Betty foal would undoubtedly be.

Well done HHO, results are in and she’s just a funny shape bless her wee heart. Pleased to have my lovely, straightforward girl to keep enjoying, and boot camp resumes immediately! Hopefully we’ll manage to build on that topline over the winter. Think it will be a while before we are forgiven at the yard however, the girls had whipped themselves into a frenzy of excitement at being foal aunties!

Well im glad shes not pregnant, but don't stop looking for about a year cause bloods can be wrong :p

Lots of hill work and going over raised poles and she will bounce back into shape no problem!

I was hopeful for a BOGOF from your lovely girl, but obviously it's a lot less faff/money/stress for you if she's not pregnant (but less cute). So probably the ideal result, really.

The vet said that, but since she would have to be at least seven months pregnant the vet said we are safe. Just back from a hilly hack, cooling down from a no mercy schooling session. Be gone belly!
