Fatality at Badminton - Officials Useless

I think you learn something from every emergency you have to deal with. If you have been lucky to that point, you don't know if your plan is going to work. Certainly I know my OH's planning for point to points has evolved since the first one he did. Before the first one he read the senior partner's book and notes, and he has since been on the racecourse vet CPD (now compulsory for all vets at p2ps/races) and done the fire brigade horse rescue training. Added to the experience now he has, he now has much firmer plans on what he will agree with the other 2 vets, what he will raise in their pre race discussion and what I should/shouldn't do (other than keep out the way). From experience he realised that a second pair of eyes is very useful in a race as the field strings out, and that if he knows I will try to spot the number/colours of a fallen horse, he doesn't have to think about that as he drives over (reports are supposed to identify the horse exactly).

I fence judge without him (busman's holiday, so not a chance in his book!), and always ask to be paired with someone good at catching horses - never having owned a horse, I've only occasionally caught one (probably not in at least 10 years), and never in a stressed situation. I definitely wouldn't run up to a loose horse, just walk slowly and calmly, and would probably stop and think for a second or so before doing so.

I don't think that TV/Radio commentators should be expected to say any details of what has happened to an injured horse - too many people want to know the ghoulish details with no reason to know. I would hope that the lack of other announcements was after consultation with the owners/rider, who maybe wanted to phone/speak to other connections themselves rather than have them find out through other means. As for babbling on, how else are they supposed to fill the time - they were probably worried about the horse and rider but being professional broadcasters talking about anything but!

I worry that Louisa or any of Desert Island's connections or the officials read this thread...

What is such a tragic accident being pulled apart in detail including details of the injury - a day which all involved would wish to forget and would like to remember the wonderful horse and its achievements.
