Got home from work, couldn't find Bracken, our scratty 15 1/2 yr old mongrel. Age is taking its toll on her but she eats well and loves her walks. Eventually found her upstairs asleep on the bed. They're not meant to go upstairs and know they're not allowed on the beds so I stroked her gently until she woke up. She just laid there staring into space for 5 mins. She didn't want to walk down the stairs and kept panting and pacing. Fed them and she ate ok. I phoned the vet and promptly burst into tears thinking this is it. I sat with her for 20 mins just stroking and trying to calm her down. She eventually settled.
Took her into the vets and she only turned into flipping Bambi, leaping and jumping around. Vet called us through, I shut the door and burst into tears again, embarrassing or what ?
Anyway the vet did a thorough examination and can't find anything clearly obvious so has given her a steroid jab and says to see how she goes over the weekend. If not we'll take her back Monday and the vet said she'll take bloods. She's not as confused as she was and is now playing with Buddy.

Blinkin heart breaking animals, why do we do it ??

Oh that's so sad :( hopefully she was just having a senior moment. Fingers crossed she stays perked up. Bless her. I dread they day I loose any of mine. Will break my heart.

Eating: good. Playing: good! Hopefully she's just a bit under the weather, or possibly a bit dehydrated? And will make a full recovery. I wish her many happy healthy years with you.

I do have to say that it's good to think about what you'll do at the end while they are still well. Our old GSD was slightly off colour (piddling in the house a bit, still liked to walk but was very slow and slept a lot). We had 'the chat' about whether we would need to PTS soon and what our plans would be for afterwards, as he'd had surgery for a thyroid tumour 2.5 years before and I knew it was likely that we were coming to the end. It really helped to come to terms with the inevitable (albeit we hoped it would be some way off) and to have a plan in place. As it happened, we had 'the chat' and he passed away on his own the very next day. Not what I think will happen here! But it really helped that we'd already talked about it, from an emotional perspective.

........ She eventually settled.

What a revealing and honest post. All that you can do is take life one day at a time. With your woofer, and at the age that she is, then she will dictate from hereon in how life's to be, for a while and until it's you who needs to regain control.

Well done you.

Alec.

I really did think this was it tbh. The last couple of weeks she's taken a long time to settle in the evenings and only seems to settle if she stays in the kitchen even though we bring her their beds into the sitting room.

She has a 'long' walk well, for her every Sunday, running around the woods. She just ambles whilst the other two go off squirrel hunting. The rest of the time for her it's round the village on a lead.

My plan for when the time comes is a walk up the woods, a big bowl of roast chicken (they don't get titbits) then off to see Uncle Peter - he's the only vet I want.

Copperpot knows what a lovely vet he is. He knows it's bad news if I ask for him personally so there's no quizzing or questioning. Hopefully it'll be a while yet :smile3:

Funnily enough our last old bitch only wanted to stay in her bed in the kitchen towards the end too. That's where we had her PTS eventually.

I'm glad things are a bit better tonight. Nothing like a trip to the vets to perk something up! Hugs to you. Something all animal owners have to face at some point, and never nice.xx
