By mid February every year, just as the days are properly lengthening and the moult is under way, my wonderful horse turns into a "let's have fun with mum" idiot. Shies at everything, leaps around on the road and is a general idiot. Fitness levels can be varied at this time of year, so it's not that, he has no hard feed, same hay, no grass in field, he just does it. Then by March, he has settled again. Another horse at the yard has also lost the plot on hacks and had his unfortunate owner off twice yesterday.
 
Could be hormones, mares seasons can brought on by longer day light hours as the pituitary gland will pick up on the day light.
its why some yards keep there mares under false sun light lamps (in stables) though the winter so they continue to season. and some mare do just season though winter any way so its not to say all mares are this way but given what you have said it could be the reason

My young cob has been an idiot lately too! She is moulting, could be thinking about coming into season and tbh the constantly changing temps can't help. You are not alone, OP.
 
This is my first Feb with my horse, bought her last April. Shes been pretty chilled until today, total stress head! Hoping its a one off or maybe its mad February!
 
Mine are being twits as well. I think at 3pm the hunger bell must start ringing because if I get there before then, they come in nicely... leave it much later and it's tails flagged and snorty nostrils a-go-go :D Spring is in the air!
 
Yep, mine too! Spent yesterdays hack going along like someone had poured rocket fuel into his feed, including idiotic leaping, jogging and head tossing every time I wouldn't let him trot. Today he was galloping around the school squealing and bucking (just loose thankfully :D ) Normally he's a horse you have to persuade to move :p
 
Mine are all mad at the moment - mares and geldings. Went to get one in to ride today and the little stinker got away from me and all of them spent the next 1/2 hour galloping around like loonies including the 30yo😂
 
I'm sorry to tell you that we aren't done with summer down here yet. So I suggest you suck it up and don't put away the winter woollies for a bit.

We get to keep summer until at least the end of February - and then, all things being equal ('cos last winter was revolting!), we are planning on an Indian summer for March, April and May. This may be extended, without notice, until the end of June. That will allow winter to arrive in July, then bog off in August in time for spring in September.

Just saying.

Thank goodness it's not just mine! He's been a total spanner this week, I put it down to moving yards but must be a combination since he's normally the most chilled 4yo i've ever met. He's 16.3hh but seems to grow when he's excited, think he's spent most of the last few days at around 18hh!
 
My Connie spooked at a footprint in the sand in our manege this morning, and we had a VERY jig joggy hack on Sunday (which was admittedly half in a snowstorm).....

My horses actually escaped from there field this morning. I got a phone call from a lady in the village saying they were heading towards the A41 ... I've never moved so fast in my life!! Thankfully someone herded them into an adjoining field the farmer has sheep in (thank god it wasnt padlocked) and they were having an absolute hooli in there bombing about, throwing themselves on the floor rolling, then bombing about again ... Took me twenty minutes to catch them. I was mortified!

Got to get back on them in a week or so ... that will be fun!!
 
Always fun to read when you're planning on bringing your horse back into work after nearly a year off! Thankfully mine seems pretty placid still, but even she was having a good look around her today when being led in and out (that's the closest she gets to spooking :D).
