Hello,

Posted on here last week about feed advice for my new boy. Found that he was silly on calm and condition. Decided to avoid all molasses, cerals, starch etc. Put him on simple systems green gold and top nosh, which he has been on for a week. It seems that some people's warnings on how lucerne can be very rich and send them silly are coming true. His energy levels are definitely up, but he is getting silly, spooky and a bit bolshy. Now he does need some more topline and a bit more weight on, but have only had him a short while and can't have him stupid, so no molasses etc!

Help! Need to get this sorted, don't want him dropping off but need him calm and sensible. So I was thinking allen and page fast fibre? But need a good non heating chaff - honey chop oat straw chaff? Also been told about grass nuts, top spec cool conditioning cubes, top spec calmer? Experiences, opinions please lovely people! So stressed!

15.1 gelding 12yo welsh/arab cross we think. Light work, six ish days a week, half hour ish schooling or hour ish hack each time.

And you want to get weight on him? Is he is at night?
Are you sure his little "issues" are not from trying to settle in a new place?
Baileys number 17 is non heating, and perhaps add some outshine?
I used to give a "hot" mare Cool Fibre which was rather good.
I do think though that perhaps its a settling in period thats making him appear silly. New place, surroundings, people...... some horses take months to settle properly.
Also is he getting a decent amount of turnout?

He does need some more muscle/topline. His behavior is most uncharacteristic. He is out at the mo 24/7.

Sorry, need more info!:D
How long have you had him?
How long have you known him?
Define "uncharacteristic behaviour", are you SURE its feed related?
Outshine and work will improve the topline, but its like all things, you get out what you put in.

If anyone has any opinions on the feeds I mentioned or ideas that would be great. Obviously I don't want him on outshine as that has got some wizzy things in it that I am trying to avoid!

Fast Fibre, brilliant stuff :D I feed it to my 20 year old wesh x arab, he is out 24/7 on fair grazing, not rugged and looks amazing!! I also feed Speedi-beet ( or Kwikbeet )Alpha A Oil and Baileys Low Cal..........all almost sugar free :)

When it gets a bit colder I will up the Alpha Oil ( he only gets a handfull atm )

I would give Top Spec Cool Conditioning Cubes a try. Cereal free - high fibre.
Alongside maybe something like Alfa A Oil? Or pick an unmolassed chaff. Top Spec do Top Chop Lite? Their website is very informative.

What about Graze-on, Readigrass or Just grass? Similar energy levels as Alfa-A / lurcene but not the same complications - allergy / reactions etc. My horse loves it and does very well on it. I top up with micronized linseed for weight gain if / when required.

Right, I have a horse that can't have molasses, can't have lucerne (alfa a) and is a poor doer, he gets:
ad lib hay, mix of old meadow and Italian Ryegrass
2 stubbs scoops (dry) of soaked Kwikbeet in a bucket to munch on
2 stubbs scoops (about 1 - 1.5 kg) of Badminton Ultra grass as chaff
1 kg of oats
700g of Outshine
1 scoop of fibre nuts
TopSpec Lite balancer (Lite, because he shares the balancer with a yard of good doers)

Bolwocks , I wrote you an entire treaties on this and the fucvking computer lost it. So to cut a long story short, more exercise! It isnt the feed ,honestly!Get out there and give him the long walks and school him while you do it.Good horse needs good exercise. Foirget all the advice regarding feed . Work him like a good horsewill work and his metabolism willpretty much tell you if he is getting enough feed .
