Hi Guys,

So basically I have a 4 year old native type , we believe she is New Forest X Lightweight Cob with a bit of Thoroughbred in there too. She is about 14.2 and should reach 14.3

So my question is what do I feed her this winter ? She usually comes in at night but this year I'm thinking of leaving her out as have a new youngster who needs the stable ! So what can I feed her to help with her 1st year living out ? And any other tips on how to make sure she is ok in the cold weather ? She will be rugged ! :) If she needs it I may have to get a bib clip or some sort of clip as I don't want her getting sweaty in work and getting a chill from where she is sweating to much. She will be having some haylage put in her field that's as far as my feed regime is at the moment ! :S

Any help would be much appreciated but could really do with the help ! :)

Thanks in advance !!

May not need much in the way of feed, as long as she has access to forage Hay/haylage she should be able to keep herself warm in the cold weather.

Ad lib hay (or small holed hay net if it tends to be tubby) maybe some lucerne (alfalfa) for some protein and a good vit / min supplement. If weight is not good then look at adding some more lucerne / sugarbeet / copra then oats and or oil.

Ie start with fibre and add grains etc as necessarcery

That's great thanks. piebaldsparkle she does need some sort of feed in the winter as she has needed it before even when being stabled. And maccachic thats's great thanks I'm thinking of starting with Hifi no molasses ? Along with vit and min supplement ? Then add something to that ? Hows that sound ? She will also be having ad lib haylage :) She does have a nice field of grass though which will last for the minute. Any other tips of suggestion would be great people. Thanks !!

I'd stick with the fibre diet too; you may well find that living out with ad lib haylage she does fine, especially being part native. The Hi-Fi will be fine for her but if you find she is dropping weight then adding speedi beet or its equivalent, and micronised linseed or oil usually does the job. :)

Stick with the ad-lib hay and get a decent mineral lick from your fed merchants i.e. Rockies Five Star or something similar.

I'm feeding my yearling as they have no grass or hay at the minute but as soon as they go to winter pasture, that's it, min lick and 40 acres of grass!

This site is handy for balancing diets and finding out what feeds and supplements provide value for money (you add in the costs you pay and it calculates weekly / monthly / yearly costs) altho sometimes it better not knowing the total costs lol :)
