D is a typical lazy cob when it comes to schooling. Out xc, Sj, hacking or hunting she is fine but just does not see the point in schooling and I end up having to resort to pony club kicks. My instructor and I are working on this from a schooling point of view and she's massively better than she used to be but the thought of a whole winter of schooling ahead of us with no jumping to break it up is a depressing thought.

She's ridden 6 days a week, either schooling, jumping or hacking, competing at a local level every other weekend. I can feel but not see her ribs and she's a lovely weight for a cob coming out of summer, really sleek so she could take a higher energy feed without too much concern.

I did have her on 1/2 scoop of oats a day mxed in with her chaff but I'm not convinced it made a huge difference. I'm tempted to try her on a competition mix but have never fed one before so not sure if it would make a difference where the oats didn't.

I suppose the difference with competition mix as opposed to oats would be that the mix would contain a more balanced mix of nutrients. I feed my horse a light comp mix for a bit more sparkle and energy when she is working harder. They all vary but mine has more protein, more starch and more vitamins than my regular mix (in the form of oats, more barley, peas and maize).

I can't help here - Inca is always very forward - if she gets sluggish in the school you just wave a stick in her direction (god forbid you should touch her with it.....

) the only time I gave her any kind of mix (I think it was pasture mix) I thought I was going to die

I have almost exactly the same type of horse, workload etc. Oats don't work on all horses and your's might be one that doesn't respond. But what really really worked on our somewhat sluggy cob was a balencer. Turned out that he wasn't getting the right mix on vits and mins. 2 days on NAF pink powder and he was a different horse. I absolutely stunned. It really might be worth a try.
