Feeding for condition...with a few problems

I have a 5yo TB hard-to-keep-weight-on-sugar-and-barley-intollerant horse with ulcers too... We have tried various feed combos over the last 2 years, the most success we had was with Allen and Page feeds but one gave him the wrong energy (loopy pony) and the other made him toooo calm. He could be very agressive in his stable too, looks like this was his way of saying his tummy hurt - he was also a slug to ride, kick smack kick smack and could nap/buck like a good un... vet believes all conected to the fact he had a sore belly...

anywho... we started him on Winergy Equillibrium about 6 weeks ago, its a complete feed so you dont add anything to it, just 3 kilos a day over two feeds with the odd carrot, I was reluctant to start it in winter as I thought he's end up a toastrack without fibrebeet etc, its infact the opposite - he is fat, forward going without being stupid (for the first time in 2 years) and has stopped biting/getting aggressive in his stable.... he gets nothing else, no supplements, no calmer, no extra oil or vits, nothing.... just his 2 feeds and his normal hay ration

this is him at the moment.... he's worked 5-6 times a week and should hopefully go to a few ODE's next year

the other thing that might help you is a thing my vet told me... in winter when the horses come in with empty bellies from there being no real grass (obviously i dunno what your turnout situation is but i'll tell you this anyway) then us riding them or exercising them makes the acid in their stomachs swish round and can aggravate the ulcers, making them play up, whan they come in or about 30 min before you ride give them chaff, just chaff, as it neutralises the acid in the stomach and thus keeps them much happier when being ridden.... seems to have worked with my lad....

website is www.winergy.co.uk , my lad gets med energy as he isnt the most forward going - though now he is like a rocket so it ooks like he wasnt forward going before cos of his sore belly!

I tried endurance mix on Darcy on the advice of Baileys helpline... huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge mistake, its still got sugar in it and still got cereals in it, he went nuts, got aggressive and I had to take him off it and leave him for 2 weeks to let him chill out again.... be careful if you decide to go this route....

I hope this all helps!

I have used Dodson & Horrell build up cubes in the past, worked extremely well for us, contains digestible fibre, oil and micronised cereals but TBH, not sure if barley is in there.

Not read all the suggestions so I'm sorry if I'm repeating other people's ideas.

Have you tried Saracen ReLeve? If you haven't I'd strongly recommend giving it a go. It looks like a normal mix but it's cereal free, low starch & high digestible energy. Jim cribs quite badly if he gets any cereals at all & can get "hot" on other feeds but this really really suits him. Tasty too judging by the way he polishes the bowl!

Cooked linseed meal is also god for weight gain & is gentle on the stomach.

Baileys Outshine or Saracen Equijewel might also be worth a try.

dengie and baileys and some of the others have specialist people you could talk to or email and they will plan a tailored diet for you, that might help? I've used the baileys person, and she was fab!

The diet you are feeding now of alflalfa and sugar beet is basicaly what simple systems will recomend............ but it would be worth checking with them about quantities etc. I fed it with topspec balancer and oil, but weight gain just takes a long time with some horses- especialy large framed youngsters/. Hang in there!

what about copra meal? Has virtually no starch, although does have high protein levels. Economic as you feed it soaked, its made from coconut so puts condition on without nasty side effects (laminitus etc) mine is on it and has put condition on, he's not a very good doer but this seems to be working well!

my horse has the same issues as you and he is on spillers high fibre cubes as he seems to tolerate these better than any of the conditioning cubes. i also feed spillers cool fibre as an unmollased chaff, fibre beet and lots of soya oil alternated with linseed jelly.

good luck!

I would go and look on Saracen's site and email them, I have never seen such a choice of feeds and from what I remember they do a special one for TB's to avoid ulcers.
The best way to avoid ulcers (I had them so tested on me!) is give aloe vera capsules every day, they dissolve in the stomach and reduce any inflammation better than zantac or it's horse equivalent. I take the capsules from Holland and B.

I tried everthing with Baron, he was always underweight all year and none of the weight gain or expensive feeds worked. So I decided to revert back to straights.

I now feed him Alfa Oil, Barley, a ceral mix (simalar to Baileys No. 1, its just mixed cerals with nothing added) and fibre beet. I also add pink powder and a cup full of soya oil. I sometimes add a bit of maize for a boost if hes drops weight suddenly.

That combination has proved fanastic, hes has gained even more weight since swapping from speedi beet to fibre beet. He is now still putting weight on despite haveing really poor grazing at the moment. He is in at night with adlib haylage.

This is the first time he has actually gained weight significantly since I got him 20 months ago and he will be staying on this feed for the forseable future, I have even cut it down slightly which is something I never thought I would be able to do.
