I am having to feed my native mare Haylite at the moment due to being unable to soak hay (she suffers from COPD) and because she is stabled at present is getting through loads of the stuff! Am I right to worry that feeding Haylite could bring on an attack of lamintis? (She has had this in the past) I don't really know what to do as we buy from our YO and Haylite is the only option apart from hay. I don't really have the facilities to steam hay either. As soon as I am able I will go back to soaking and feeding hay but am worried in the meantime!

I rang them this morning to ask them the same thing, have to ring back today after 2pm as the lady wasn't there, will post the answer here later today.

When you ring them you should check their figures for digestible energy, protein and sugars to make sure they are not excessive. You could then compare the stats with a high fibre haylage producer such as Horsehage High Fibre - as they provide all figures on their website.
Certainly on the sugars, you want this to be as low as possible and certainly lower than 10% as a minimum.

Thanks Pottamus, I have left a message but they haven't returned my call. I must admit to being slightly irritated when you ring a company & they say "Can you ring back?" surely they should be ringing me?! I never ask my customers to call me I have to say.

Hi, ok the lady rang me back & was very helpful. The digestible energy & protein are 6-7 so lower than Blue Horsehage, the only figure she couldn't give me was the important starch & sugar, she said this was because it is difficult to measure accurately as depends on the time of day, if sunny etc etc when the haylage was made, which another company did tell me before. She said it is second cut haylage & if the other figures are low, then so will the sugar & starch. I have bitten the bullet & given it to my 2 tonight as out of the other. Hope that helps.
