I have a 15.2hh 6yr old Welshie who came to me in March slightly underweight and looking very weedy. He has filled out to some degree, but still looks a bit hollow round his thighs and I think could still do with a bit more condition, especially coming into winter. The other thing with him is he is extremely spooky and gets his knickers in a knot about nothing all the time, but now he is starting to chill out ever so slightly he is actually lacking in energy by the end of a schooling session. He's worked 5-6 times a week, either 45mins schooling or 1-2hrs hacking, competing at dressage most weekends, been XC a couple of times and coped fine with an 8mile sponsored ride and all the jumps on Sunday. I can only feed him once a day so he can only have a maximum of 2kg of hard feed and I need to find something to give him a bit more energy for his work without making him hot but also maintaining/slightly increasing his condition. Possible???

Current feed once daily:
Winergy Equilibrium Medium Energy - 1kg (0.5kg on his days off)
TopSpec Balancer - half rations (250g)
Equijewel (stabilised high oil rice bran - similar to Bailey's Outshine) - 750g
That makes up my 2kg of hard feed
He also gets TopSpec Calmer (for the moment - I'm trying them all!), salt and Equus Health's Winter glow (linseed, fenugreek, seaweed and garlic)

I have also tried Spillers slow release energy cubes and mix before trying the Winergy. Most feeds seem to suggest feeding silly amounts - anywhere up to 6kg a day which is just completely impractical and soooooooo expensive! So I need concentrated feed, good amount of calories and sensible energy.

He lives out 24/7 on a decent sized field but I think the grass isn't growing much anymore as he always tucks into a haynet when I bring him in to get him ready to ride.

Equijewel has 15 MJDE per kg, whereas Outshine has 24 MJDE, so a swap to Outshine would mean you could get more calories into the same size ration.

TopSpec is brilliant. My mare is a hot head, not spooky but flighty, touchy, easily upset type.

I've had her on TopSpec for the last 2 years and its been brilliant, she is much more rideable. When she needs more condition I give her black sunflower seeds which seem to give her what she needs without boiling over.

ooh, thanks for that - think i will change onto the outshine. thought i might try adding the topspec cool and condition cubes instead of the winergy equilibrium as my next step, although not sure if they'll give him enough energy?

The Winergy Medium Energy has 11.1 MJDE/kg whereas Cool Condition Cubes have 12.5 MJDE/kg - therefore the Cool Condition Cubes will actually provide MORE energy than the Winergy.

Hiya

FB was quite spooky and silly when I had him on the medium winergy, yet the low wasn't enough energy for him...Don't think I'd feed it to a drama queen given a choice.

You can use winergy growth as a much less starch conditioning option which my skinny minny mare did well on last winter. I think they have now brought out a conditioning version too as so many people were using the growth for that reason.

Other than that I'd be tempted by the cool condition cubes to try maybe.

I use winergy growth for exactly that reason. think its 12.5 mj/kg of energy which is the same as cool condition cubes but much less starch so might be better for your spooky boy. my friend tried the new condition one and loved so either might be a more obvious transition from medium than to go to a normal feed?

Top Spec every time ! Everywhere I go people comment on how good my horse looks, he has so much topline and muscle and a lovely shine.

i've gone for topspec cool condition cubes and he's now on 1 cup of outshine and 1 cup of equijewel plus the topspec balancer and calmer and he's looking amazing and has just the right amount of energy. it's not a cheap mixture, but it's starch free (pretty much) and has stopped most of his silliness but sitll gives him enough energy.
