I have a 15.2hh 6yr old Welshie who came to me in March slightly underweight and looking very weedy. He has filled out to some degree, but still looks a bit hollow round his thighs and I think could still do with a bit more condition, especially coming into winter. The other thing with him is he is extremely spooky and gets his knickers in a knot about nothing all the time, but now he is starting to chill out ever so slightly he is actually lacking in energy by the end of a schooling session. He's worked 5-6 times a week, either 45mins schooling or 1-2hrs hacking, competing at dressage most weekends, been XC a couple of times and coped fine with an 8mile sponsored ride and all the jumps on Sunday. I can only feed him once a day so he can only have a maximum of 2kg of hard feed and I need to find something to give him a bit more energy for his work without making him hot but also maintaining/slightly increasing his condition. Possible???
Current feed once daily:
Winergy Equilibrium Medium Energy - 1kg (0.5kg on his days off)
TopSpec Balancer - half rations (250g)
Equijewel (stabilised high oil rice bran - similar to Bailey's Outshine) - 750g
That makes up my 2kg of hard feed
He also gets TopSpec Calmer (for the moment - I'm trying them all!), salt and Equus Health's Winter glow (linseed, fenugreek, seaweed and garlic)
I have also tried Spillers slow release energy cubes and mix before trying the Winergy. Most feeds seem to suggest feeding silly amounts - anywhere up to 6kg a day which is just completely impractical and soooooooo expensive! So I need concentrated feed, good amount of calories and sensible energy.
He lives out 24/7 on a decent sized field but I think the grass isn't growing much anymore as he always tucks into a haynet when I bring him in to get him ready to ride.
