Quick question for those that feed linseed. How much do you feed and how? Do you soak it first or just mix in dry with other food in the bowl?

Also why do you feed it? Pros and cons.
Just pondering as been recommended feeding it but I do not have any experience with it.
Thanks in advance.

I feed micronised linseed. I’m not very accurate with dosage but I suppose it’s about half a mug for my oldie and an egg cup for the others. I feed it mainly for coat condition but the oldie has it for general condition now her teeth are few. I just mix it in feed.

I feed micronised linseed too and have a 4 year old clydesdale. I feed her half a mug a day in summer, which is 100g and a full mug in winter.

My older tb has 250gms a day split between 2 feeds, the younger ones have approximately half that. I think it aids coat and condition.

Don't need to soak just feed it as it comes. I use one of those pots you get things like hummous in, the shallower size. That's about 120g which is about right for coat condition and omega oils for a 16 2 horse but you can feed a lot more for weight gain.

Thank you everyone. It’s for a 15.2hh hunter type to help aid coat and general condition as past winter he lost a little bit of his “sparkle”.

I think theres a difference between the micronised (which is what I feed) and the cooked meal. Might be totally wrong but I had the idea micronised holds more omega oils! Anyway with new horse I just add a small handful and then build up as some of them pull a face at first. Once they're used to it mine will eat it by itself. I feed a couple and handfuls in summer and about half a mug in winter, though mine are out on a night acreage over winter and don't get much hay.

I compared Charnwoods Micronised and the Marriages one ages ago. You may be able to find it in a previous post. I don't think there was any difference in the Omega oils but there was a noticeable difference in starch levels.

My TB and ISH both get 200g twice a day of linseed mixed in with their chaff. I feed it with a little sugar beet or dampen it so it isn’t so powdery and gets everywhere.

I just feed micronised linseed when the quailty of the grass drops after the first frosts. I don't use hard feed so it gets fed with low sugar chaff and unmollassed beet + ad lib forage. It's a great carrier for supplements as well as being good for condition and coats + it's relatively cheap. I up or down the amount depending on how the horse looks.

Yes, thank you, you contributed to a thread I posted a couple of years ago after I bought Marriages linseed by mistake. My mare wouldn’t even eat the Marriages, but she hoovers the Charnwoods.

starch levels 10.9% for marriages, 3.7% for Charnwood

Thanks for reposting that TP.
I can get Castle Smart Linseed easily where I am at the moment having previously used Charnwood. Their analysis is 3.7% starch so guess it must be repackaged Charnwoods.

I'm feeding TB a cup in each feed, he's a skinny bugger and likes eating it.

I feed my WelshD 50g a day for coat and hoof condition - using the micronised linseed. That’s what his previous owner fed him and he looks great. I just add it to a small scoop of Agrobs muesli and dampen the whole feed.

I feed it for coat and condition. Apparently, it’s also good when there’s no grass as it supplements Omega 3 found in grass. I used to use Charnwood’s but now use Thunderbrooks as, apparently, if you feed a reasonable amount, you need to supplement with vitamin e. The Thunderbrooks and Science Supplements stuff has vitamin e pre added at the correct level so it’s just easier.

Good for feet and coat, and if you up the quantities, good for condition. I feed 2 mugs a day to my TB, one AM and one PM. I add it to his normal feed, no soaking needed.
