When did you swap over from feeding twice a day to once..My 7 month old pup seems to have gone off his morning feed, doesnt appear to be off colour so wondering if hes telling me something:D
Hes on raw dont know if that makes any difference :p

Think you're supposed to keep up multiple feeds til 9 months? My lot are 9 months and still desperate for breakfast. If your lad is telling you he doesn't want it, maybe change what you're giving in the morning. I'd e loathe to stop 2 feeds at that age.

Never, two feed are much better than one for any adult dog. With our Boxers they are on 4 feeds a day at 8 weeks until 6-7 months then move onto 3 feeds, two feeds start once the growing has stoped at approx 2 years

Just read you are on raw, with raw 2 -3 feeds is better, what is his tyoical weekly diet? You might be over loading on something.

We stopped feeding twice a day at 6 months ish (can't actually remember when) because she just stopped eating it, but would wolf her tea down. She has been on one feed a day since and is doing brilliantly.

Different things work for different dogs, don't feel pressured to feed how anyone else does, just see what fits your dog :)

BTW If anyone has any references to papers about feeding once or twice a day and the benefits etc I would love to have a read?

Cor, I like the sound of your butcher! If you're south east, The Dog Food Company is apparently fab. I'm getting a first delivery from them this week. I'll copy their products/contact page for you in a sec.

http://www.thedogfoodcompany.co.uk/products.html

They will source pretty much anything game wise, even though it's not on the page. Phone (persistently!) rather than email as Scott runs this solo and is out and about lots.

I had a discussion about this with someone today who keeps feeding three a day until nine months.
I cut to two feeds a day at six months.

We had one bitch who was fed once from six months onwards, never did her any harm.

Depends on the dog, routine, feed :)

Ill offer again in morning and see how it goes.I dont mind doing two feeds just thought he was not interested until I found out later today he has been chewing branch in my back garden and been sick.Thats probably why he has been off his food :rolleyes:Gave him light tea and seems to be ok daft dog:p

Re are 2 feeds better than 1- any animal can only digest so much in one sitting. If you split up the food into 2 + meals they will be able to get more out of it meaning less wastage and saving you money. I am open to other opinions but at the moment this is the idea I think is most plausable.

:)

Make sense its same with horses especially if they are losing condition we split several feeds.
:D

Most active/producing animals do better on frequent feeding. You could quite easily add cows, sheep, horses, dogs, pigs (even people) and see animals in better condition if they have multiple feeds. I agree horses and dogs have completely different digestive systems, nutritional requirements, etc but dogs aren't that dissimilar to pigs or humans (higher protein requirement and some different enzymes (lacking in some other enzymes) - promise i'm not trying to get too science student on you all just interested in biochemistry and digestion in animals lol).

My pup is 4.5months fed raw and won't accept a full meal in the afternoon now just plays with it. So tends to get just a couple of pig tails or sardines. Which is just enough for him. Other than that he gets two proper meals a day with the other two.

Interesting. All the research i have done on dogs has proven the opposite.
That dogs do better with a gorge and starve diet. They have better athletic function with the kind of diet, build muscle quicker and their heart is healthier. They also fine tune their digestive enzymes and systems with the gorge and starve and have much higher levels of specific digestive enzymes (which i can't be bother to get my notes out and look for the correct names :)) which help with speedy digestion.

On another note have you ever looked at the difference in digestive enzymes of kibble and raw fed dogs? Very interesting.

Keep trying The Dog Food Company. I got two emails yesterday to remind me to sen my orderand he's coming on Thursday. I'm pleasantly surprised cos the first time I contacted him, I had to be persistent. I'm perversely excited about feeding the dogs whole rabbits!

Fraggle is just over 7 months and currently on 3 meals a day. She's eating for England at the mo! I feel its largely due to her currently have a growth spurt, but also with how active she is. :)

Hope mine has growth spurt at 7months I prefer bigger breeds not quite sure how big he is going to be as I rescued,he is pedigree but havent come across another aussie yet, they can vary alot size wise.Although I said he was on 2 feeds thinking about it he often has bone mid day ;)My boy is very active as he is down yard with horse twice a day have to be careful hes not over excercised.:)

They are not suppose to be big at all. About 20 inches for males
