Several weeks ago, I responded to a post about what we feed our dogs and I mentioned feeding raw chicken but the amounts I quoted were met by responses to the effect that I feed them too much! I actually have no idea how much raw food a dog should have; a local butcher saves all the unwanted bits of chicken etc - sometimes two or three massive bags for £5 - and I basically feed them a carcass or two each plus wings and other unmentionable bits. I must admit that our two year old Golden Retriever is looking a little bit less than slim recently (despite long, active daily walks) and perhaps there is someone out there who can put me on the right track! Dogs in question are springers, Golden Retriever and Munsterlander (aged between one and three and a half years, so all young, active, healthy dogs). Hope someone out there can help me!

For your information, this is what a Munsterlander looks like....
introducing Bryn (a German hunting dog with a Welsh name!)...

He's larger than our Golden Retriever, but smaller boned. Very, very soppy and unbelievably thick - but we love him! My friend has his brother from the same litter, as does a local farmer, and both are slightly taller and bigger boned than Bryn (trust us to get the runt of the litter!!!).

Slinkyunicorn, yes, Bryn has been described as a "spaniel on stilts" before now! Still, I prefer that to the number of people who think he's a crossbreed (not that I have anything against crossbreeds, incidentally!) and ask what he's been crossed with!

Do you know how much they weigh? Or actually - what their ideal weight is?

What are their activity levels? and ages?

For ref - Loki weighs just under 30kg and is very active - with long walks every day (in total around 4-5 hrs spread over a day - which I know sounds alot!)

I feed him around 900g- 1000g food per day

there is fab info here - check out sweetypye's post

Dog Feeding

If I give Loki chicken wings he gets 5 for breakfast.. obviously when meat has bones in it you have to adjust weights - cos bone weighs more.. Loki also gets dinner - which will be meat without bones and veg etc.

have you read Ian Billinghurst's books? The BARF ones? I also have a good book called feeding your dog for life by Diane Morgan

Hope this helpful?

hi, we have just had a large musterlander come in for training sharpe with a keen eye. As for how much you should feed we used to feed fresh tripe untill it became hard to get hold of, we always found 1lb a day suited most gundogs.
Is yours a munsterlander or a large munsterlander?

When feeding raw you have to balnce the diet yourself. A total raw diet should consist of around 80% meat, 10% offal and 10% edible bone.

To put it simpler i feed Alfie 900g to 1kg of food a day. He get a chicken quarter a day and the rest of the weight consists of beef, beef heart, tripe, chicken and liver. We are still in the early stages and will increase the variety over the next few weeks. You just need to make sure you are feeding MEATY bones and not just the carcasses. Too much bone provides too much calcium, runs the risk of bone in poop and constipation.
