Just wondered if anyone else has had this experience. Mare came to me 4 months ago and her poo has always been quite sloppy and smells quite sour. The horse I had here before her was the same.

Both fed Hifi Molasses free, purabeet, oats or hi fibre cubes, linseed & Pro Hoof.

New horse sweats quite a lot as she's doing quite a lot of fitness work at the moment. I have started adding a tablespoon of salt morning and night to her feed and her poo is completely transformed. It looks like proper firm horse poo and is far more solid in consistency. I don't think it is a coincidence because her poo changed literally the day I started adding the salt and has stayed changed.

Interesting. I have had one or two horses that have been like this, either permanently or temporarily. I will try salt next time I have a problem.

I always give my two about a teaspoon of salt every day and they have access to a Himalayan salt lick at all times. They have solid poos. Sometimes so hard it bounces on the road when we are hacking out.......

Interesting, do you just use normal salt?

My TB has always had sloppy poos, he's now 19 but it would be interesting to see if salt helped helped to firm them up!

Table salt from supermarket - tbs twice a day. And interestingly she is far more interested in finishing up every last bit of her food whereas before she'd leave the last bits. She now licks the lot up.

Those of you with sloppy pooey ponies try it for a week and report back. Will be delighted if it works for you all too.

I am going to try this too :) my mare has had slightly sloppy poos on & off for a week or so now. Don't feed any salt at the mo' Will keep you posted !!

Mine used to have mega sloppy poos, far worse than any cow pat. Magnesium chloride was the big difference for us, as she has always had lots of salt too.

Right, back to the salt for my old man. His poos are fairly sloppy (nothing horrendous) but his pasture mates produce lovely specimens (!). He's had salt in the past, but not at the moment, so I'll try some this week and see what happens. Thanks for the tip!
